I'm the proud new owner of a Thinkpad S440 with an i5 fourth generation processor 8GB of RAM and 256G SSD. Suffice to say this thing is lightning fast for my everyday office tasks and I couldn't be happier with it.![]()
It took me forever to actually make up my mind to get a Lenovo Ultrabook as the web seems to be full of their wifi connectivity problems. I'm so happy that I bit the bullet as mine is completely issue free and holds a stable and fast wireless connection.
Now, pardon me if my next issue is silly... I'm not very computer savvy.
My Lenovo Update desperately wants to update my wireless drivers which I've stopped so far. Is it possible that a driver update will get me the same wireless issues a lot of folk seem to have?
Also, it came out of the box with Windows 7 Pro, which I'm running atm. I also got the CD and registry key for Windows 8 Pro in my package so I've been really wanting to update it.I know that Windows 7 is considered the better operating system, but... curious minds and I really want to try out Windows 8 for myself.
So. The same question. Is it likely to mess up my wifi connectivity?
Are there people out there with perfectly fine S440s who upgraded to Win8 without any issues? Or have been using Windows 8 out of the box problem free?

Hi mylittlev!
Your best bet will be to record down which driver you currently have for your WLAN driver, and then test the new driver. If you run into any issues, you can always "roll back" or even download the driver version that was stable in your experience. Alternatively, you can do another search for wireless related problems with your hardware, but try to narrow the search down to the update you're considering. If there's no scuttlebutt on that driver specifically, then usually no news is good news.
Windows 8 has its advantages, but again, only through trial will you know definitively whether there are any unwanted quirks. Windows 7 is the desired OS due to its aesthetics and interface; most people simply hated the new look of 8 (particularly the Metro UI) and some of the idiosyncrasies that plagued it at launch, but updates and 8.1 resolved these.
