I've been trying to find a way to use the DVD drive from a T400 (Serial UltraBay Slim DVD Multi - the SATA one) outside of my T400 (I need to use the UltraBay for a second hard drive.

The Sabrent enclosure does not work, and there doesn't seem to be another one on the market.

I was wondering if anyone has tested this adapter that supposedly does SATA to USB.

Has anyone tried something like this? I hope SATA is SATA is SATA when it comes to connector and HDD and Optical, but I know how standards are never quite that sometimes.

One package of Red Vines to the one with an answer.

    Thanks.

It will be fine. SATA is SATA for the HDD and ODD.

Okay, well I am going to pick one up tomorrow...if it works, you get the Red Vines.

I thought SATA was SATA for HDD and ODD, but the experience with the Sabrent has made me doubt.

Have you looked at nando's thread for converting the ODD bay w/ a HDD/SSD caddy and getting an ext. enclosure for the ODD (or just prefer the bare ODD)?

:) . There's three products here that could do the job. The Dell enclosure, the sata-to-usb 9.5mm enclosure and the newmodes sata to e-sata/usb cable (if you have a e-sata/usb combo port).

Thanks. Of those three, the "US$30 Optical drive to USB Port Cable" looks like the right one. Where can I buy one? The third, one, with all the cable, is just too messy for on the go use.

Ideally, one cable/adapter from SATA port to USB.

I had not, but thanks for the link. Not really interested in eSATA, but it's looks like there is a SATA to USB solution.

I am going to try the Apricorn and see how that works.

The Apricorn cable does not work; it has a wide connector that only fits 2/5" HDD.

So SATA is not SATA is not SATA.

Looks like there is no solution for this. I guess if there was an adapter from "wide SATA" to "mini SATA" (which is on the back of the UltraBay Serial Slim DVD), that might work.

I guess I need to up the ante to 2 boxes of Red Vines. Or maybe cash?

I can't believe an adapter that works does not exist. (expect for the frankenstein loose cable mess.)

That's what I thought when I saw it. I got one of these for my drive and it works pretty well. Maybe you want to shoot the seller an email to if they've got anything for SATA or know of anything. They were a good seller to me. Or if you've got an older PATA drive laying around, you could use that with the cable.

Thanks; I will check that out.

If it were SATA, I'd be all set. That's a PATA one. I don't have an old PATA drive, and would like to be able to use the SATA one I have.
