edit: i meant OS installation rather than booting.

I'm planning a clean install of win 7, but i don't have any spare DVDr around, neither do i have an 8gb usb drive, but i do have an 8gb sd card and a sdcard-to-usb adapter - will i essentially be able to use this combination in place of a regular usb stick for the installation?

Only one way to tell. Plug it in, boot the machine, hit F12 at POST, see if it shows up on the list.
