I'm thinking of upgrading the cpu in my SL400.

It currently has the T6570 (Socket P).

    The mobo is the 2743CTO.

Will the T9600, T9800 and T9900 work in this machine? (The T9900 is a little pricey but the T9600 and T9800 would be significant upgrades at a reasonable price.)

Will the stock fan/heat sink be sufficient or will I need something else?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Unless you need top performance, a faster hard drive or SSD is much more likely to offer a speed boost than a few more MHz on the CPU. Typical notebook usage doesn't push the CPU much, but a faster drive will make things seem more snappy. Plus, swapping the drive is a lot less messy. Good luck and welcome to NBR.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.

I already have a 7,200 RPM drive in there. It's a 750GB as I ran out of space on the 320GB it replaced. To get that kind of capacity in an SSD, I'd be looking at a hybrid (I think).

Poking around various supplier's sites, it looks like the fastest cpu I can get away with is the T9600. Has anyone successfully installed one in an SL400? Any tips?

Specifically, you'd be looking at the Momentus XT, which once it figures your usage patterns, offers near SSD performance.

I can tell you unless you you're pushing the CPU like coding video or crunching databases all day, you most likely won't be able to discern a difference between the CPUs. If you are coding video all day, you're best off with a desktop anyway. Many moons ago, I upgraded my R60 from a T2300e to a T7200 and I didn't notice anything different.

Well you convinced me to cancel the my order on the 750GB hard drive and get the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB instead but I'm still curious about upgrading the CPU.

Anyone know if I can use the T9600?

I would do the drive first, then if feel you still need more performance, you can do the CPU, but for 98% of tasks, you'll honestly never notice any speed boost. My guess on the T9600 would be no since the SL400 didn't offer it, but it could work. If you want to find out, you'll probably have the guinea pig on that one.

The SL400 did come in configurations with a T9400, so there's a very good chance that the T9600 will work as well. I haven't heard of anyone dropping in a T9600, but it should be worth a try if you feel you really need CPU performance.

To answer my own question: yes, the T9600 will work.

So far the temperatures have been no higher than with the stock cpu but I plan to keep a close eye on that for the next couple of weeks.

I bought a cpu that was supposedly pulled from a new laptop for $65 on fleaBay and should be able to sell the old one for $15 or $20.

    Not a bad $50 upgrade.
