I finally managed to get a 3G sim and setup my 3g connection -the speeds are quite good (by Indian standards) approx 1.5 mbps download speeds. however, in a cruel twist of fate, the service provider removed all unlimited plans :(

I'm looking softwares for the following - any suggestions are welcome

    1) bandwidth monitors / meters - The app should have a capability of monitoring bandwidth usage only on specific interfaces - I do not require monitoring on my ethernet and wlan. Only monitoring on my wwan is required.

    2) SMS / phone apps for the gobi2000 wwan card - the access connections app has a very confusing interface. Any simple to use application for making / receiving phone calls and messages from the phone?

If you don't mind my asking, who is your service provider in India?

the great BSNL :D - I'm not expecting any tech support from those guys. When I went to their office to ask for a SIM, they gave me a data card initially.

Nice! Sometimes these BSNL folks can really surprise you. I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your question but it is of interest to me as I will getting a very similar unit like yours in the next few months.

@ v 310...thanks. First question: How much did it cost you to get the Sim from BSNL and what are the rates? I can't wait to get my hands on this + my coming X201!!!

The sim card cost me Rs. 59 - on top of that, I had to pay Rs. 197 to activate the data plan. After that, it's your choice - details at this link: :: BSNL 3G ::

I tried the initial 500MB for Rs.275 - it worked out well - although the bandwidth was consumed very quickly. they had an unlimited plan for 1499 a month, but they've scrapped it now!

The download speeds are a steady 1.8 mbps - although they advertise 7.2 mbps, you don't get that much!

net - net, this is a very good option if you want to access the internet quickly on the go - I preferred BSNL because they are the most economical in terms of packages and their network coverage is second to none.

    you're gonna love it when your x201 + 3g card arrives :)

Thanks. Is the BSNL coverage nation-wide (even in the remote areas)? And, I am assuming that tech support is zero...am I correct? Also, do you have to be a BSNL customer (cell connection or landline connection etc.)?

    1) yeah - most of the metros have 3G speeds. You might get edge / gprs when there's no 3G coverage. In short, where ever there's a BSNL cell signal, you're assured of basic connectivity.

    2) Tech support - well :D

    3) Nope - you need ID proof, address proof only. I submitted a copy of my cell phone bill and driver's license.
