T61 Vista Ultimate, is the "SPDIF Interface" required? You can see it in the Sounds properties (right click on Volume in taskbar). Id like to remove it because for some reason my computer switches to the "SPDIF Interface" at times, which results in the "Speakers" being turned off...

Is there any purpose for the "SPDIF Interface" on a laptop with no RCA jack?

The SPDIF interface is for 24bit audio. You have to have an optical cable to use it and it has to be sent to an SPDIF in device like a home theater receiver. It sounds to me like this is your audio out interface since you don't have a RCA out and it would be ok to disable it if you don't use the optical out.

If you have one it looks like a small hole between the size of an rca input for your tv. It will have a light inside that is red if you have one or it will have a little removable cover on it and I mean really little.
