I've removed the HDD from my R61e and put it into my T61p, the computer doesn't recognise it at all. Tried another SSD HDD from another laptop of mine and same deal. Any ideas why the T61p doesn't seem to be able to run SSD HDD?

The one from the R61e is a OCZ Technology Core Series v2 SATAII 2.5" Sold State Drive and the other is a Silicone Power SSD 2.5" SATA Solid State Disk 64GB.

If it fits in but it isn't recognized it might not be seated correctly. I have a W500, but my solution was as follows: my HDD came with a caddy and rubber rails. Using the caddy but no rubber rails did not work, though it seemed to fit. Using the rubber rails but not the caddy, and all was fine. I have no idea whether the solution to my "non-recognition of an SSD" will help...! PS I looked right into the HDD bay before placing SSD in to make sure I knew what I was trying to line up. It was not obvious before that...

I might try without the caddy on then. I've tried without the rubber rails previously and it made no difference. It definitely is possible that it's not connecting properly. I'll mix and match and give it a few more goes.

Try without the caddy but WITH the rubber rails. That should line it up right. Did so with me. Imitate the caddy's retrieval tape on the SSD by using electrical tape.

Forgive me if I'm over-simplifying, but you're not trying to boot from these disks are you? I.e. you have a 2nd drive in the laptop to boot to or you are using recovery/windows discs to install the OS on the SSDs?

The SSD is the primary HDD in the unit. It already has Windows installed on it etc., as I said it's removed straight from an R61e which is a very very similar machine.
I have also tried reinstalling Microsoft Windows Vista but it can't pick up the HDD's either.

    Success!

I went into the BIOS and restored the factory defaults. I then went and changed the SATA mode to Compatability. I then fitted the OCZ SSD and nothing. So I pulled my Gigabyte T1028 apart and removed the SSD from that which was the Silicone-whatever brand one and that has booted up fine! Looks like I won't even have to do a reinstall of Windows!
