Is it possible to to swap out the HDD for the SSD in this model Lenovo U530.
It currently came with the Hybrid 500G 5400RPM SSHD(8GB), I got it for $500 and want to switch it to an SSD.

Check the hardware maintenance manual to find out:

I assume yes, on page 37 onwards you can see the HDD as removeable. -
I noticed that, but has anyone been successful in doing this? I would also need to move the operating system to the SSD. I just wanted to make sure before I keep this laptop because if I cannot do this I need to sell it immediately.
Thanks again for the quick response Jobine

Yup, just grab one of those mini philip screw driver to remove the back cover and you're all good (lots of screws though). You'll probably have to remove the bracket that's holding the HDD and just install the new SSD without it because the SSD is relatively thicker causing it impossible to put the cover back on if you were to use the bracket.
You don't have to worry about the SSD sliding around without the bracket because there's a layer of sponge inside the cover located right on the SSD spot. And it'll tighten the SSD for you after you put the cover back on. Pretty neat from Lenovo.
Hope this helps
And by the way, where in the world did you get yours for $500 -
I got it from a local craigslist deal. Although, I am not sure if I want to keep the laptop because it's so big, and not the lightest thing ever. Although I am in need of a long lasting battery life computer school as of now =/
I am currently using a HP Pavilion DV6-3000 with a 3rd gen i3 Processor, which is about 2.23GHz
