I've decided to bite the bullet, pay the 15% re-stocking fee and send back my T61. I've done two reformats and my laptop keeps having issues - everything from blue screens to explorer freezing on menial tasks (despite the 2gb RAM and 1Gb turbo memory). It's too bad, because other than the whole not-working thing, the T61 is an exceptional machine. :( I'm going to replace it with an ASUS A8Js.

Sorry to learn you're having such troubles with your new purchase. But freezing despite turbo memory? Maybe it is because of turbo memory. That would be the first thing I'd try to disable to see if stability improves.

Any possibility that Lenovo would call it a lemon and send you a different one? Have you asked for this? Seems like a reasonable request since it never worked properly from day one.

sorry to hear this thing. i feel if you had choosen Win XP and the story might have been different. i have a 15.4'' T61/XP and everything works very well, so far

good luck with your ASUS A8Js.

How easy is it to replicate the problem? Could you send it in and tell them "If I do X then Y then Z... I get a blue screen." I'm sure they could fix it (even if that means a replacement) if they were able to replicate the problem.

I've tried disabling the turbo memory - no luck. Lenovo will replace it, but I'm not interested. I'm going to be out of the country for 3 months at a time for the next 2 years - there's no way I'm going to be able to deal with this from out-of-country so i can't have it crapping out on me.

Why should you pay 15% restocking fee? The fault, IMHO, is on the Lenovo's side.

Edit: my experiences are that if it is a merchant's fault, the return is full-refund.

Sure sounds like Lenovo's fault but whether the 15% fee is justified depends a lot on the details of the case.

I'm 1000km from home, where I have my Vista dvd, and manual. Also, I scrapped the box it came in (not smart, by the way).

And stallen: the problems haven't been replicable as far as I can tell. They've mostly been really random. The most replicable is if I restart within 2 minutes of boot-up and full windows load, I get a blue screen. But not always. I've had many weird little explorer.exe freezes while browsing the internet, while connecting to a wireless network, while playing NHL07, while opening my antivirus, while disabling my antivirus, and while closing a window. It usually takes about 3 minutes for windows to end task. Except last night when it froze and wouldn't end task. I waited 10 minutes, and finally just shut it off. When I tried to reboot, I got a "Windows System Error" message, asking me to put in my OS disk to recover some files. That was when I was like, "ok, that's enough of this now."

But yeah, as I mentioned above I will be out-of-country (law school in Australia). I leave in August, and there's no way in hell that I can have a laptop giving me attitude.

This is terrible to hear, but I can see why you don't want to take the chance. I really hope you find something better and reliable as this must have been terrible experience for you to make such an order. However, maybe you could escalate this issue and order X61 in its place as this may be a good alternative.
I hope everything works out for you.
