I really like the Lenovo T61p, but I'm very picky, and if it showed up with a sub par screen, any dead or stuck pixels, audio distortion, CPU whine, etc. I would want it replaced with a new one that has no issues.
From what I can tell, Lenovo would not accommodate me on this, and would charge me a restocking fee if I decided on a refund, which I would only want if they would not supply me with an acceptable replacement unit.
Am I correct in my understanding of Lenovo?
The only other companies I'm considering at this point are HP business, and Asus.

If there is something wrong with your computer and it is under warrenty they will repair it. If it can't be repaired it will be replaced. They wont repair for dead pixels or a screen just because you don't like it. My advice is to not by a Lenovo, you sound picky and you'll most likely find something that upsets you.

Almost all companies offer similar return policies, not just Lenovo. Dell is about the best in my experience. If you want an unquestioned return policy, but at Costco where you get 90 days to check it out. They do offer some Asus notebooks. If you buy there, you'll likely pay more.

edit: +1 for ZaZ's idea. Costco is teh awesome on return policies. Also ASUS laptops are pretty good from the ones I have seen. Just don't get the dumb gaming laptop they are selling. It's cheezy like a toy. Whatever you get sadly won't be as cool as a Thinkpad but oh well, sometimes you gotta do the best you can. -

I will check out Costco.
Thanks, great input from all! -
as long as you have warrenty they will fix it for you -
If something is wrong with it, just have a few Scooby snacks. That makes everything better. Right scooberdoober?

you are better buying one from a store..circuit city sells thinkpads..this way you can open it up in store and make sure everythign is to your liking

I also believe that a lot of the custom Jobs are being rushed which sometimes causes a hardware/software issue!
Sometimes Right-off-the-Shelf is better! More Time & effort is put into the Retail Machines due to the Volume/Business for the Client.
Lenovo, wants to keep Circuit City, Costco, Bestbuy happy. What's one or two individual complaint (1 machine) vs. a big Spender-Vendor (thousands of machines under contract agreement).
It's all Sales Lines!!
Just my .2 cents.

I am a new Lenovo customer and bought a t61p. First few days were a big disappointment with a washed out display (LG). Like you I am picky and did not like the screen at all. Got onsite support and asked Lenovo for a replacement screen. The tech came to my house, was knowledgeable, changed both the display (Samsung) and the inverter. The new display is awesome. I now have a great notebook with specs that would have been hard to find elsewhere.
Just my experience. Hope this helps,

Which screen type did you have pro101? I found the Samsung WUXGA model to be much darker then the WSXGA+ LG varient I ended up keeping. That was to be expected since the NITS count on WSXGA+ is higher, but unless you had an LG WUXGA screen initially, I'm definitely dumbfounded that the Samsung looks better and brighter then the LG. Perhaps it was the inverter that was faulty and not the screen? -
lg has a more 'vivid' display..but way more light leakage and a washing out of colors
samsung has less vivid colors but less light leakage and no washing out effect and can be callibrated for more vivid colors -

The LG screen I received was definitely brighter, more vibrant a screen compred to the Samsung screen not only being darker, with horrendous light leakage, but not evenly lit as well. I think the only positive thing that other people noticed about the Samsung when they were looking at them with me was the Samsung delivered 'richer' colors in some of the photos we compared to. But that could have been due to the darker Samsung screen showing the blacks better then the LG.
Either way, I found the LG to be a superior screen against the Samsung offering I reviewed. But bare in mind this was a WSXGA+ (LG) VS. WUXGA (Samsung) comparison. I'd love to see screen shots of any LG WUXGAs out there. -
yea..that's true too..it's really a personal preference..but lg screens do get the vote in this forum for its more vivid colors..althought light leakage is more of a problem with lg's..check other threads on this..im at work so really can't do much searching at the moment

My biggest problem is that they don't use the same manufacturer for the same components. Its purely a gamble.
I think it should be their first priority to level out the quality of the vendors.
Like the samsung W14'' its garbage. unusable in my opinion.

What size screen ?

i have also calibrated it for more vibrant colors and it is beautiful; compared it to an lg screen which was at the micro center near my house and it is even better; the one in microcenter is lg 14" wxga as well, but with really bad light leakage on the bottom third of the panel -
Well you see... the one i was complaining about was the WXGA+
This is what makes it so crazy.

If you read the threads from about 4 months ago you will have a tough time finding anyone that liked the Samsung screen. However, recently there have been quite a few people that really like the Samsung. I can only conclude that Lenovo had so many complaints and/or returns because of the Samsung display that Samsung must be supplying Lenovo with a better display.
I'm telling ya, originally when I ordered my first T61 I thought "I don't care what display I get. All those people posting in the forum are just being picky." But OMG, when I got my T61 Samsung LCD it only took a few hours before I decided that it was totally unacceptable.
So if Lenovo has an improved Samsung display (that is possibly even better than the LG) then great!
Scared to Buy a Lenovo!
