Someone (won't say who, but it was not me) got angry and slammed my T61p's screen shut really really hard. Should I be worried?

Not as long as it all still works.

Play it safe though and use HD Tune and scan for bad hard drive sectors. That's the only thing that might have been hurt.

Welcome to EE! Where any mechanical is the source of all our problems :D.

Eh? You're using a T61p, you should be quite fine.

You should at least check the drive.

Oh certainly, by all means. My main point. however, was that with a T61p, he's got a lot less to worry about than, say a D420 or Gateway FX. :D

I would say to check the screen also for any damage from pressure or cracks. I know that the Thinkpad is a strong machine, but that is what I would look at first.

I would be seriously pissed if someone did this to my machine. I think some people are so used to using cheap throwaway machines that they don't even realize how much money was spent on these machines.

im curious why he/she slammed shut the computer.

well, the obvious is; check for screen damage (broken backlighthing - backlight not uniform). though i doubt you have damage here as the screen has opening or closing resistance ~ no?

if the computer is on while this had happened. then yes, you should check your disk for bad sector via windows check disk and/or HD tune.

i would be furious if someone do that to my computer. good luck :)

Alright, I ran badblocks (Linux bad blocks checker) and it reported no errors. There isn't any visible damage on the display; no cracks or backlight issues.

For the most part, it looks fine. Should I be worried about the hinges and internals?

    And yeah, I'm quite furious.

Your laptop is probably fine then. Check the bezel on the right side of the screen. Make sure you don't have any cracks there. I have a crack in the bezel on that side of the screen just from transporting my laptop around.

I think you should be ok, the main concern being the harddrive since the jolt could have caused damage to platters and reading head. I would also run a mem86+ test to check the RAM just incase and in general keep an eye on the machine and keep track of any weird behavior. And most importantly keep this person away from your machine :)

BTW - You didn't tell us the circumstances that caused this event. :D

I'd say that a serious beatdown is in order.

I haven't been able to find any visible damage. I'm guessing if anything happened, it'll be internally. I'll watch for any strange behavior.

I would tell you the circumstances but it's just too embarrassing and you'll be left disappointed with such a terrible story :D :(.

I suggest pretending that your laptop is fubar and beating the crap out of whoever slammed it shut :D

    That's what I would do...

Turn off the computer and then shake it and listen for any loose / broken internal parts. If you don't hear anything, I would say you are fine. :)

I have been quite rough to my T21, works fine, even after all these years.
