Comparing the screnn of my 2 1/2 year old T60 to my girl friend's new Asus Aspire, her screen appears brighter, easier to digest. It also is glossy whereas mine is matt. Actually, except for the keyboard, her $600 notebook seems better or at worst equal to my expensive T60, though I have not tried to cart hers across continents. But I digress. Have screens improved signficantly over the last two years?

Probably, the fact that you like it is because of the glossy display. These displays tend to have more contrast and richer colors, but the cost to this is un-usability under lights because of reflections (though some are accustomed to them and it doesn't affect them).

Also, Thinkpad displays (excluding the IPSs), generally aren't... too impressive.

If your T60 has the standard (non-Flexview) screen then it's quite possible that the Acer's screen will be superior. The cheap TN screens from today should be somewhat better than those from 2007. But if your T60 has the Flexview/IPS screen then it should be visibly superior to the Acer's screen, and visibly superior to almost any screen found in a current-model laptop.
