Love my T61p, but the matte finish really gives me eye fatigue. I ran accross this article that talks about converting matte LCD's to high gloss
http://www.gadgetell.com/2006/07/gadgetell-review-screentek-gives-your-notebook-a-face-lift/
Anyone have any experience with this? Or better yet, has anyone actually done this with a T61p? Please post impressions and photos if you have.

nope...and never would as it creates more glare and would strain your eyes more
-
Personally I would not do it because you will not be able to see the screen in Sunlight and places with lots of light and glare -
the matte screen is one of the reasons i bought a thinkpad

he he viva matte finish! all of the glossy screens are like the shy ghosts trying to hide in the darkest place in order to continue to survive.
-
Agree with everyone else - the glare from glossy will fatigue your eyes more. Glossy is just hideous to use outside the house. If you are having discomfort, it probably has more to do with screen brightness, contrast, color, and position. Also, people tend to stare at the screen and their eyes dry from not blinking as much - get some eye drops instead.
-
I've done the ScreenTek mod and I can't stop talking about it.
The T61 LCD sucks. Vertical viewing angles are horrible, and your eyes get super tired after only 10 minutes of use. It seems like a lot of people are having trouble with the T61. Yes, a glossy screen does cause glare. If you can look past this issue, the glossy conversion is well worth it. -
rxblitzrx,
Can you post some screenshots of your screen? Any draw backs? How does it compare to factory gloss from Apple, Dell, Toshiba etc? -
The only draw back is the common complaint about glossy screens and the reflections you get when you're outdoors. I personally never use my laptop outside so this doesn't affect me.
On the plus side: viewing angles have improved by about 20 degrees and contrast is higher. Text appears sharper and easier to read on web pages.
I've compared with my friends T61 who got his a month before me. Honestly, I didn't even need to compare. After having my T61 for only three hours, I was fed up with the terrible readability of the text on web pages. Some people here describe it as "rough around the edges" or "fuzzy". Whatever it is... it sucks.
Compared to Dell, Toshiba, Sony. It looks exactly the same... because the technology is apparently the same. Repolarizing LCD screens, as explained on ScreenTek's website, is something you can't patent. Therefore, they're able to make the T61 matte LCD into a TrueLife, or XBRITE equivalent.
I think it's the best of both worlds. IBM durability with a Dell TrueLife LCD. -
I know what your talking about. The glossy screen makes colors a lot more vibrant at the drawback of reflections outdoors from the sun or indoors from fluorescent lighting. The key is that the light source has to be directed from behind.
It all boils down to which feature/deterrent your willing to live with/tolerate more. -
-
I honestly don't understand the physics of wider viewing angles due to a glossy screen finish. This sounds like it could be a placebo effect. All I've ever known a glossy finish to do is produce more vibrant colours. Of course, I've been wrong before - maybe someone can confirm or deny that a glossy screen is capable of producing wider viewing angles (and perhaps the physics behind this)?
Edit:
It looks like ScreenTek addresses this question on their website: LINK
I do like a non-glare screen, but improved viewing angle would be great for my x-series...hmmmmmmmmmm -

hey rxblitzrx...I just purchased a T61 14.1 wxga+ and all i've been doing for the past week has been fretting over the bad reviews on the screen. I currently have a sony vaio s580 with 13.3 xbrite display and i love it. I haven't come across a better display in years. I'm assuming from your posts you recommend going with the glossy upgrade through screentek?
I was wondering, did you send in your screen to them to upgrade and repolorize or did you purchase a completely new screen? Also, how much did it cost?
thanks in advance.
any chance on some pictures of your upgraded screen? -
What would interest me more than a glossy conversion is to see if they have a screen based on IPS panels that would fit in my laptop, that $350 upgrade may almost be worth it...
-
good point...from what i saw on screenteks site I couldn't find anything under IBM that had IPS panels...but now I'm wondering if some other companies 14.1 would work on my t61
-
I just ordered one of the t60p's from the blowout sale thing. I hope it has a good screen. (probably not) i just wish the screen could support 100hz or more like my asus v6j(the only laptop in the world that can[that i've really seen so far can do]). It's pretty fun as well running the screen at 6 hz refresh rate lol. I don't where my cursor is if i move it in a circle it appears to be randomly ... appearing.
-
Is the T60p sale still going on? I looked and couldnt find any.
-
Glossy screens are the work of the devil. They bear the mark of the trickster. Before you do it, think of the kittens!
-
-
Dip 'em in something flammable and make a meow'ing molotov c0cktail to throw at your loud neighbors.

T60PBLOWOUT07
it ends the 31st of jan
Base price 1,099
core duo ONE 2.33 ghz -
Holy crap! This is exactly what I've been looking for, and solves the only real problem I had with the T61 14.1" SXGA+ models. Any word on how this works on the dimmer (150-nit) 4:3 screens, as oppose to the 200-nit widescreen displays?

It'd be nice to get some screenshots....
ScreenTek LCD conversion. Anyone done it?
