After receiving my T420 yesterday, I decided it was time to install the two 4GB sticks of RAM I had. I put one in the easy access RAM slot, but when I turned on the computer it did not recognize it. Next I replaced the 2GB stick under the keyboard with another 4GB. When I turned the laptop on this time it did show 4GB, but still only for that slot. Next I put the 2GB stick (which I knew was working) into the other slot. It was still not recognized.

Is there something I have to do for it to be recognized? I'm really hoping that the RAM slot is not defective or something like that.

Thanks for any help in advance.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it is like this with other people's computers as well, but the RAM does not fit as nicely into the second slot as it does in the first (under keyboard) slot. With that one it just clicked in, but here I have to work to get it in.

Nothing special to do. Insert and away you go. Given that you put a known good stick in you may have a mobo problem.

I would do an extra test by moving the other known good stick (the 4 GB) to this "maybe bad" slot.

Just due to what you mentioned about it not fitting very well.....did you take it out and try sticking it back in that same slot again at all? You might not have had it seated all the way in. I popped some additional ram into my X220 shortly after getting it. Popped it in, clicked down fine, everything looked fine, closed her up and turned it on....no boot. Opened back up, still looked fine, thought uh oh maybe a bad or incompatible stick, but popped it out and stuck it back in and tried again....worked just fine. Def not a noob to that stuff and everything did look fine the first time, but alas, it really wasnt seated well appearantly. Just shows you never know! I'd give it another shot if other sticks are working in that spot, and that non-working piece is working in the other spot.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try a couple more times with different pieces and see what comes of it.
