I bought 1gig of pc2700 ram, which should work, and I'm holding it up against the current ram and it looks identical, but it won't fit in the second RAM slot, because the metal guides on the side are too narrow... Has anyone seen this before? Are you supposed to be able to use the second DIMM slot?

Yes. They won't put it there just for fun :)

Since it has never been used perhaps it needs a bit of force? Although I won't put too much force.

Try to take out the 1st one and put it in 2nd slot, see if it fits.

yeah, according to Wiki, PC2700 is DDR while the R61 accepts DDR2 ram. These RAM modules are different in size and not compatible at all.

You should look for PC2-5300 (otherwise known as DDR2-667).
