I've hassled you good folks a lot over the past few days and you've provided me with great advice. Here is my latest and, unless you see some glaring omission, last configuration:

    ThinkPad T500 - 1 Yr Depot Warranty
    2242CTO $813.96

    Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2)
    Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64
Recovery DVD: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
15.4 WXGA TFT, w/ LED Backlight
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator x4500HD with vPro
    4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Pointing Device: UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    Integrated Camera
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
Card Reader: 7 in 1 Media Card Reader
Express Card Slot & PC Card Slot
    Integrated Bluetooth PAN
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology
    Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery
Country Pack North America with Line cord & 65W AC adapter

Accessories and options: ThinkPad and Lenovo 65W AC Adapter with US/Canada/LA Line Cord $31.20

Not including sales tax, price is $845.16 ($1578 - $732.84 with 10% coupon).

Seems like a good deal to me. BTW, the price on the T500 on cpp is about $90 less with the release of Win 7.

I know that many like the WSXGA+ resolution, but I spend the majority of my time research and writing and rarely desire for fonts to be smaller on my present 15.4" WXGA screen. Sometimes I need to enlarge but rarely reduce. Consequently, I'm staying with the lower resolution.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks much,
    Bill

Have you considered the T400, or the R400/R500??? Why a T500 specifically?

I was thinking seriously about the T400 but decided that since I'm not so interested in portability, I went with the larger screen size. Plus, the T500 has a display port and the T400 doesn't.

Hard to believe, but there is a deeper discount on the T500 on the cpp site than the R500, as well as a 10% coupon for T series ThinkPads over $799. The T500 I ordered ended up a few dollars less than a similarly configured R500.

The WSXGA+ screen is a better screen than the WXGA if you happen to get the LG screen.

That could very well be true, and I guess a WSXGA+ could simply be zoomed in to make fonts larger. Of course, the winning of the lottery by getting an LG had to occur. :)

Plus, I'm tired of CCFL screens dimming over the years, so I wanted to go with LED. A WSXGA+ LED, or better for me a WXGA+ LED, would have gotten into my configuration. With the current limited options, I went with the WXGA because I rarely need to reduce something, I sometimes need to enlarge fonts, and I wanted LED. The colors may not be as vibrant, but my primary usage is research and writing.

When configuring a computer, there are a lot of compromises. I would love to have had something on the order of a T500 with better multi-media capabilities for the few occasions when I may use them, but other computers with such capabilities either lacked the fine keyboard or sturdy build or got too hot or were too pricey or whatever. Given all these considerations after way too much time spent researching, I'm very satisfied with having ordered the T500.
