    Sending Thinkpad to Lenovo for checkout

    Guys, I need and advice as there is many experts on this forum :)

    I need to send my thinkpad T410 to lenovo depot to check my CPU due to big difference in processor cores temperature (sometimes 15 degress) and here are my questions:

    1. Once I call them, they will send me a box to send it back to them, what kind of post service would that be, a courier? How's this going to be?

    2. Should I remove hard drive and send it to them without harddrive?

    3. How long does it usually takes to complete this process (sending, repair, recieveing back).

    1.- It's usually UPS, I believe. You package your laptop carefully, then bring the package to any UPS Store and drop it off for delivery back to Lenovo.

    2.- Yes. The techies have their own hard drive that they use for test purposes, so they will be using their own HDD anyways. Since your issue has nothing to do with the HDD, you can take it out. You likely also won't need to send the AC adapter and battery, but it doesn't hurt to confirm with them.

    3.- Really depends on parts availability, luck, etc. Some people have even gotten a system turned around and repaired in just about a week, although average seems to be more around two weeks.

    More than likely, your issue is probably a defective thermal pad, or poor placement of the thermal pad, which shouldn't be too difficult to rectify.

    MIdnightSun - thanks for your answers.

    I have checked thermal compound on this laptop, and changed it myself once, and it didn't help. I think this must be something to do with CPU itself and thermal sensors. I hope, I didn't lost warranty by changing thermal greace, or did I?

    If you tell them you changed the thermal compound, your warranty will get voided.

    ack, yeah, just hope they don't noticed the new thermal compound. Otherwise strip the machine of optical drive, battery, hard drive and you're good to go.

    usually they would test it for one day, and if they can figure out the problem and have the necessary parts, then they should send it back to you within 5 business days if you are within metropolitan area.

    Why are you bothered about different core temps? It's quite normal if your apps only use one core.

    it's because this 15 degress and sometimes even more in difference is abnormal in my opionion. I posted a thread there as well and people confirmed that their temp difference between cores never actually exceed 5 degree.

    My main concern is the future of this CPU and wheather there is any physical fault with it. I would like to keep my T410 and never sell it as this is the last 16:10 14 inch thinkpad :)
