The intel core 2 duo processors were supposed to have a price drop on september 2nd(see image); just a thought, but is it possible that this labor day sale is just an effort to clear out all of the old inventory of higher priced processors? (i know there is price protection, but i'm sure a majority of people buy a computer and don't check back every day to try to find a better price and don't actually know about the protection [it isn't advertised at all].
How soon will the processor price drops actually be seen when ordering a new thinkpad?

I'm no expert, but I suspect you won't see any immediate price drops, if for a while. Judging from the chart, in 2 months there wasn't any significant prices drops but rather stayed relatively the same with a few exceptions. Thinkpad prices stayed relatively the same as well (unless you bought one with a discount like EPP, coupons, etc.). But this is my opinion.

They could drop, or they could go up. Don't expect the Intel price drop to immediately funnel down to a lower cost from Lenovo. But as always with technology, the price will always eventually go down.
-
Actually i just registered for the forums just to talk about this topic.
I am supposing that the price drops are affective immediately with regards to buying from the manufacturer in bulk. And I also suppose that Dell, HP, Apple are not dropping their prices until they have sold pretty much all of the "old priced" processors, to make sure they do not lose profit during the price drop and maintain their margin.
We really just have to wait out and see. -
Yeah.. I hope they drop their prices soon. I've been holding out buying a notebook until it does. =)

they won't for another 2 months or so...cost cutting to the consumer takes a while

if you want to upgrade, wait for the 2.8GHZ 45mn 6MB L2 cache refresh coming very soon. Thats what I will be buying. its also has the same 35watt power consumption that all current Santa Rosa chips are using.

).
The Penryn refresh for Santa Rosa is scheduled for Q1 2008. The more significant refresh will be Montevina and that wont come till Q2 2008...so quite a bit longer than soon :/ -
-
According to Anandtech Penryn chips aren't coming til late 2007 and the low end chips won't be out til 2008. Thats for desktop processors, which usually get first dibs at new technology, so mobile processors based on Penryn could take longer.
