    Dear all:

As I know that the cover materials of IBM T series Notebook are those composite materials which contain titanium and manganese. And it is just those materials that make the T series Notebook not only portable but also solid. Could anyone please to tell me something about the cover material of the IBM R series Notebook? Thank you very much.

Now I am using a IBM 600E Notebook. This notebook impresses me very much. It has been used for over four years. However it still looks very decent and with a PII 300 and 192M memory, it can run windows 2000 and Office XP very smoothly.

I will begin to pursue my PhD in USA. So I want to buy a IBM laptop. My budget is 1600$. Hope my future laptop will as excellent as the former 600E. :)

Any Suggestion for me? Thank you very much.

Go with the T42. You would be fine with a T40 or T41, but they both have batteries that rattle (this was fixed with the T42). It is slim and light weight and provides all the power you will need.

    Check www.newegg.com for low prices.

My understanding is that the T-42 comes with either a Sony battery or a Sanyo battery. The Sony is the tight one while the Sanyo battery still rattles.

Aleman and Hangfire, thank you very much for your helpful information and kind suggestion.

I think that T42 is really excellent. On Newegg I find one T42 fiting my budget very well. It is 2378-DUU(1599$). [ :)]

But could IBM-notebook experts please explain: why on this forum few people like the IBM R series Notebook. They are also very powerful, for example ThinkPad R51 1836BBU(1599$, Intel?Pentium?M Processor 1.60GHz, 256 MB, 60 GB,15.0",1400x1050, 32MB ATI Mobility RADEON 9000, weight 6.2-6.6). From the Specification of R51, I find that R51 thicker and heavier than T4x. Is this the only reason that no one choose R51??. And, dose R51 have any other shortcomeings comparing with T4x. [8)]

Some information I get from IBM:
    ----------------------------------------

    Thank you for contacting IBM.

The shell material of the R Series ThinkPads is very durable
ABS plastic. If you have a ThinkPad 600E, you may wish to look
at the T Series ThinkPads. The R Series are great machines, but
the T series are what replaced the 600 Series ThinkPads, and are
    our high end Thinkpads.

The IBM ThinkPad web site can be found at:

    www.ibm.com/thinkpad

To speak with an IBM sales representative, please contact the
IBM PSG Direct Sales Department at 1-877-999-7115. Please
choose option 4 and a representative will be happy to assist you.
This department is available Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 9:30pm,
    Saturdays 9:00am to 8:00pm, and Sundays 10:00am to 6:30pm,
    Eastern Standard Time.

Thank you for visiting our site and contacting IBM.

    Alan,

I think someone already discussed this here.

One suggestion - wait till you become a student, universities offer discounted prices. Also, each program might have unique computing suggestions for their students.

Dear m77, Thank you very much for your kind suggestion.

    >I think someone already discussed this here.
Yes, I find the post: http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1913&SearchTerms=R51,T4, . However, I wonder why on that post there are only few people support the T series. I think that the T series ThinkPad do have highlight comparing its same-price R series ThinkPad. As I know that the ABS plastic shell will distort slightly after used for years (But maybe many person only use their notebook for three years and then they change their notebook again.[ :D]).
