Right now I can live with the HDD I currently have. When do you think Windows 7 will be coming out. I am not sure if I should get a HDD now, or wait for 7 and then install it freshly on the new HDD.

In general, with technology, you should not buy what you do not need, because in a short while, the price of whatever it is you wanted will be lower.
Why do you want to replace your harddrive? If it is obviously dying (clicking, bad SMART diagnostic information, etc), then you shouldn't wait. If you just want a faster drive, wait unless you find a very good deal. -
I want a faster drive.
-
Waiting won't offer you much.

wait for sandisk G8

Will prices of SSD's drop by July?

160GB 7200RPM Hitachi.

Thats pretty fast already if its the 7k200 series. 500gb 7200rpm will be faster, but I don't know if you'd notice a difference. I went from a 100gb7200 to a 320gb 7200rpm, and the difference is negligible, but i needed the space.

$140 for 60gb, sandisk G8, the best MLC SSD in the world, they claim.
But it seems like ture,
don't waste your money buy the stupid HDD. SSD is much much faster -
I am saving up money from now until July and plan on spending 1,000 on a SSD. By that time I believe that some issues will be fixed with SSD and I will be able to get a good 160GB drive. What do you think?
-
You plan on spending 1,000 on an SSD? ....Why?
What "issues" do current SSDs have that you are afraid of? -
My thoughts exactly. You may as well buy a new laptop with a few hundred dollars more - it will probably outperform your T61.
-
If you could afford it now, I think the Corsair s128 is a decent buy. I have my eye on it now. It doesnt use the faulty controller and the speeds are pretty decent. If not, wait for the new Sandisk SDDs.
-
what ? 1000 for SSDs? are you kidding me ?
sandisk G8 is almost perfect and has a fair price. -
The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
Your drive is pretty fast already and I don't think another one of today's standards will make a big difference. I would just save your money and buy the drive exactly when needed and not before. Save your money and when you need it go for it. $1000 for the SSD for your T61 is not worth it at all in my opinion. Not saying don't go for SSD, just saying I would not pay that price for the model you are looking at. Something that has a better cost/performance ratio would be better.
-
When are the Sandisk G8's coming out?
-
I'm interested to know what issues are there with SSD's, as alluded to in an earlier post. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
-
Issues with random writes.. Also issues with price.
-
I am going to buy a SSD when Windows 7 comes out. How much money should I save up for it. I want atleast 160GB space. Any ideas on how much money I will need? I know right now that a good 250GB MLC one is $600.
-
In a year I think a quality 200GB SSD should be sub $350... maybe even less.
-
OT: Is this a good quality screen and up to par the WXGA+'s Lenovo ships
-
Who made the screen in your laptop?
If the answer is LG Phillips, you should not notice a difference in quality. TBH, most LCDs look very similar in quality, people tend to nitpick way too much. -
How do I know what they are selling is actually LG/Phillips, what if they are lieing?
-
Then file a claim with ebay.
This is where I buy my screens since it is kind of immoral to buy from ebay and then put the part in a customer's computer: http://www.blisscomputers.net/servlet/StoreFront
They do have an ebay account as well, not sure if they ship to Canada but for personal use, I ALWAYS buy from Bliss on ebay.

They have the screen, but only in Glossy! How come! I want it in Matte!
-
It probably isn't a genuine thinkpad screen then. Thinkpad's (minus SL series...but real thinkpads?) have always had matte screens.
-
There is no such thing as a "genuine thinkpad screen."
Lenovo contracts their screens out to other companies (samsung, LG, etc) just like anyone else - so there is only such thing as a "thinkpad compatible screen" - a screen with all the correct connections and dimensions.
The key is to finding a screen that meets the quality standards of Lenovo.
So... find out the manufacturer of that screen. -
They said it's Matte and they get it directly from LG. Do you believe that?
-
Who said this? Bliss?
Yeah, I'd believe that if they say that. -
The website you recommended only has my screen in Glossy and not Matte. Can you check for me if they do have Matte, maybe you can find it better then I can.
Should I buy a new HD now or wait until 7?
