Hey all,
Should I buy an after market ssd for my t410? Because I am always on call for work boot up times from hibernate have become increasingly important to me. I have also killed many platter hard drives by dropping them from a little above desk height onto hard floors while the machine was powered on.
Will I see a significant boost in boot-up times (from powered down, sleep mode, hibernate?) Is it far more robust when it comes to accidental drops? Thanks for you help people

my t410 is currently configured with a 320gb 7200rpm hard drive

If you can justify/stomach current market prices for an SSD; by all means, go for it. Personally, I'm waiting on my T410 as well which also is configured with the same hard drive as yours.
-
Yes, you should!
-
Especially if it will aid your ability to do work, they aren't all that expensive anymore.
-
I dont mean to be cheeky, but couldn't you just leave your laptop on standby?
-
I would order your t410 with the standard 320gb standard then upgrade to the new micro c300 ssd, but wait a while because the price will go down it's the fastest ssd but it just became available to the public

Intel 160 SSD FTW.

Do you use your DVD drive much? I pretty much never do, so I'm gonna move my 7200 RPM disk from the main HD bay to the Ultrabay and put a small (60-80 GB) SSD in the main HD bay to be my boot and applications drive.
Basically, pictures, videos, and music take up tons of space but I don't need them to open instantaneously, so I'll let my normal drive handle that while allowing me to buy a smaller (Read: cheaper) SSD drive for the important stuff. -
From sleep mode?--not likely, as I don't think it's IO-intensive. From hibernate or shutodwn mode though?--yes, definitely. These are both IO-intensive tasks. I think the performance can vary from model to model of SSD, but most if not all should be noticeably quicker than a magnetic HDD.

This is an interesting idea and many people do it--however, one of the things the OP mentioned was a tendency to drop his running laptop on the floor and ruin the magnetic drives in them. In this case, the SSD + HDD hybrid may not be a good fit.

any suggestions for an ssd in the 300 AUD (australian dollars) price range? I would probably want something greater than or equal to 128gb. I'm currently looking at a kingston 128gb for 299 AUD. Thanks for all your comments

My current work laptop, a Dell D630, does not handle sleep mode very well due to the way it is configured. I'm also curious to know whether the t410 heats up in sleep mode. I have a tendency to grab my laptop out of a bag most of the time and wouldn't want to oven it.
Apparently the w510 gets very hot in sleep mode. -
YEAH
the G2, to be specific
no laptops should be even vaguely hot in sleep. the only component that gets power in sleep is the ram. ram doesn't (or at least it shouldn't) get hot.no it doesn't - that one is faulty. read the thread -
After my SSD upgrade, entering and exiting sleep mode was quite noticeably faster, although the major differences are in boot, hibernate, and shutdown speeds.

sorry, midnightsun!
