I've once wanted to upgrade my HDD to a faster 7200rpm, but after 2 weeks use, I found something odd:
- My Momentus 7200.2 vibrates a little hard every time it accesses data
- It. sometimes, in intensive uses, can reach to 49*C, which warm the right palm rest significantly.
I don't know if I replace it with a 5400 rpm drive, such as Momentus 5400.4, will these problems gone?
Thank you.

If it's under warranty you should get it replaced.
-
Can you explain a bit more? Will Lenovo warranty my hard disk?
-
If you bought it from them they will. If you bought it separately then contact Seagate
-
I mean, with current conditions of my hard-disk (working properly, only vibrating and hot), will Lenovo warrant it? I believe that Lenovo (or other manufacturers) only warrant parts that malfunction.
-
You should ask about getting a new one. Regardless if it is working, it's not working as it should(or at least before).
-
FYI, I've got a Momentus 7200.4 on a T510 and I don't see or feel any vibrations.
Try using SeaTools to check your drive
PS: just don't forget to backup your data..if you need so. -
My T400 was an old machine. Can anyone post their HDD's temperature here? My desktop's HDD might reach 40*, but nothing higher. I thought that laptop's HDD can be hotter because of cooling system's limitations. Was I wrong?
@oct: I feel the vibrations in the right palmrest. I believe that where the HDD's placed, so I think it vibrates. It may be the fan. I'll try Seatools -
Well I have a T61 which is older than the T400 with a Seagate 250GB 7200.4 Momentus drive. I don't feel any strong vibrations during normal use, though obviously if you put your hand on the palmrest for long enough you can feel that it is working but the vibrations are not strong enough to cause discomfort. Its currently running at 34 degrees Celsius in my system and seems to be running fine at the moment.

If you're machine is under warranty and the drive is not performing as expected, Lenovo should replace it. Just give them a call. They'll probably overnight you a new drive.

Optimally, yes. But in practical terms, going by my recent (and continuing) experience, Lenovo may take a while to react and also be obtuse about it. But, and perhaps this caveat is important, this experience may vary from market to market.
In India, Lenovo is terrible at addressing warranty-related issues. They seem to think that the customer is guilty of having deliberately done something to mess things up. But again, I stress, this is - in my experience - the case in India. -
IBM handles most of the warranty service calls in the western countries......
and in most countries they are pretty good at dealing with warranty concerns. -

IBM handles the warranty service calls in India too...but...as we have discussed elswhere...! -
I got a hdd replaced on a R61i 2 years ago, when it was overheating more than usual. I told the tech that i had the exact same hdd in my other R61, and when plugged into the R61i it was not overheating, and a new hdd was sent out overnight no questioned asked.
And my friend's T61 hdd was replaced within the first week of his laptop purchase, when he complained about hdd noise issue, which i did not pick up. When a new hdd was sent out, it was making the same amount of noise. He only stopped complaining after one of he went to a computer store and personally tried 3 brands of 7200 rpm hdd, and they were all making the same amount of noise (he had to pay restocking fee for each purchase, nearly $200 dollars in total). Eventually he stopped complaining about the noisy hdd after he got a SSD that costed him like $800 AUD, only to have his laptop stolen two weeks later, i guess that is karma for complaining so much to IBM and me.... -

Well, what can I say? I can only recount my personal experience. -
"There is no reason a T400 latest generation TP should not be able to run a 7200RPM high capcity HDD"
Including mine but..... I thought of a caveat.
A couple of years ago Seagate losy a patent battle on disk noise and I've noticed that the bulk of noise complaints are on Seagates. I don't know if that's germane or not.
"Downgrading" to 5400 rpm is not the way to go.

My W500 came with a Hitachi 7200rpm HDD. I was used to 5400rpm HDD's and had heard the WD 5400rpm Scorpio Blue HDD was very quiet, so boughtone to compare. I quickly realized the 7200rpm HDD was much quieter and at a lower pitch! My conclusion was the acoustic is more due to the specific brand choice of HDD than its rotation speed.
Should I downgrade to 5400rpm HDD?
