Hi All,
I have never owned a thinkpad, and I have never use a trackpoint before. All my pre-laptops have touchpad. I am going to get a thinkpad x201, and still thinking if I should get a touchpad for it.
When the system has both touchpad and trackpoint, I am not sure if it will cause any issue for the system.
Is it hard to get use to trackpoint? Thanks!

I think it's better to get both and have the option to see what you like, rather than get only the trackpoint, end up not liking it and being screwed. If you do like the trackpoint only, you can disable the touchpad, or get a new palmrest and remove it all together. But it would be more of a pain to get the touchpad after you've already ordered the machine. I had never been a fan of touchsticks before I got a thinkpad. I had had experience with them on toshibas and dells, and was unimpressed. I like the thinkpad one though, and during work I use it alot, and when I'm browsing or doing non-typing things I usually use the touchpad.

Get one, its not that much for optional touchpad $ wise.

I agree, and get both. That way if you don't like to use the Trackpoint, at least you will have the track-pad to go back to.
-
For $20 I'd say get it. If you decide you like the pointstick better, you can always disable the touchpad.

That being said the trackpoint is very easy to use. I only have that option obviously on the x200. Though some, such as ZaZ, prefer touchpads so I agree with getting both since you are not sure of your preference yet.

you can also use the trackpad as a scrolling device. that's how i use it on my ultranav keyboard when i want to scroll through long documents. go into the mouse control panel and increase the scrolling areas for the pad and you'll have an easy-to-use navigation device.

Because you've never used a TrackPoint before, it would be prudent to get both. However, I would much PREFER to have mine without a touchpad (I'd even pay extra for a clean palmrest if I had to).

Personally, I find the trackpad useful at times (scrolling, and certain other movements), although usually I use the TrackPoint on my T500. For $20, I would definitely go with the optional trackpad.

It is multi-touch. Supports tap zones, scrolling regions and multi-touch gestures.
-
Its addition would increase the resale value if you ever decide to to sell it.

for the price, get it, just think of it the same as you're carrying extra mouse around. There will be time when someone else need to use your thinkpad and they only know how to use trackpad; happen a lot to me in meeting with customers and they want to show me something using my laptop.
-
Get it if you're not sure; you can disable it later if you don't like it. If you don't get it now, then you might not be able to add it later - or if you can then you might find it a hassle and make you regret not getting a touchpad in the first place.

EXACTLY i wish my X300 came without the touchpad
trackpoint is the best ever thing happened to me in my laptops life! -
I personally find it hard to do mouse gestures in firefox with just the nipples.
Should I get a touchpad for x201?
