So I'm using my t61p right now but really not using the nice graphics card on this plus I wouldn't mind a bit more battery life since I carry it to school and it'd be nice to just leave the adapter at home. I mostly use my computer for documents (excel, word) and then internet browsing. I want a T400 if I were to change laptops as it fits nicely within what I'm willing to spend.
so what about this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=110358925952&Category=177. It has an LED WXGA+, backlit (i want this). All the other things aren't that important like processing speed, bluetooth, etc. I don't need that. Also I'd upgrade the battery to a nine cell so I can get that 7+ hours of battery life. I have a couple copies of OS that I can use and just download the thinkvantage drivers and other drivers to make my thinkpad work. Essentially I'd be paying $800 for this machine since I'll sell the 6 cell and plus there's the 8% cashback. Would it be a step down from my T61p? any help is appreciated.

You have a really nice laptop right now mate. If I was you and battery life is what I was after I would buy a second battery and done with it. You can probably easily get another year out of what you got and still sell it for a pretty penny on Ebay. Just my 2c.

Not a bad deal, it should work well for you.

The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, I agree with steve. I think you should stick with the T61p. Awesome machine and you really won't gain much in weight/size reduction with a T400. Plus why spend the money? Unless you know you can sell the T61p for a good price.

Be aware, that the new model will be slightly wider. Your T61P is one of the 4:3 14" SXGA+ models. the newer widescreen models have more width (wasted space beside the keyboard), and the savings in depth is irrelevant as the batteries stick out on the 14" wide models. Just something to be aware of.
The T400 will have a brighter, albeit slightly lower resolution (WXGA+ = 1.296M Pixels, SXGA+ = 1.47M Pixels) display. It should also get substantially better battery life (possibly close to double due to the 45nm process, Medium voltage CPU, and integrated graphics). The difference in processor speed is small (slight edge to the P8400), but the difference in GPU power is quite substantial (although the x4500 is still adequate for desktop level tasks and video playback).
Beyond that, it really depends on how much battery life you need, and how often. If you only need the extra battery life every so often, just getting a second battery for your T61 makes sense. However, if you use (or would like to use) your laptop for 4+ hours on battery regularly, then the switch to a T400 may be worth it. -
yea it all makes sense guys. Just rethinking it over, I should really keep this machine. Maybe I'll get back in gaming or something, haha. But I appreciate your guys' input.

If GPU power isn't your concern then IMO it might be a good time to sell the T61p and get a T400.
I have thought about getting a T400 for similiar reasons but have decided to keep my T61p for another year or 2. I use the GPU power.
Also you may be able to undervolt your T61p to conserve battery life. -
Not a great deal from what I can see. It's very much a base model, which you can configure on Lenovo Canada's webby for $1199 ($839 USD) and there a 16% deal going on right now.

Should I get this T400?
