I just got ThinkFinControl. Should I let it use it's built in smart mode rather then what I was doing without the program. Is it better for my laptop? The fan seems to run A LOT less but my laptop runs hotter.

Depends on how you set it up. It'll def stay anywhere from 5C-15C cooler. I don't see why you wouldn't use it, it can only help unless you set it up wrong, and let it get too hot before the fans turn up.

Smart Mode is for people who like their laptops quieter. But if you regularly play games or run processor intensive applications, then using BIOS or manual is better.

assuming that you're talking about tpfancontrol, then I'd say that it's smart mode is pre-configured for quieter fan operation, or in other words it will let your chips go hotter before the fan start turning.
I'm using the same program but to the opposite effect where I have boosted fan speeds so that it would cool down my heavily overclocked GPU and let me play games with pleasure
you can change temps and fan speeds in tpfancontrol.ini file -

Using manual. I set my fan to 7. Will this wear down my fan more? I don't care about the noise.
Is BIOS mode like using my fan without the program? -
If the fan is constantly spinning up and down, it will wear it down sure, but don't worry about it that much. Just run it however you like...figure out your noise vs temp preferences. It isn't rocket science.

I'm using 64 almost 50% of the time... we'll see how it holds up in the long run. Someone's gotta be the guinea pig after all.

I really doubt it. Just make sure to clean it out because the faster you run it, the faster it collects dust and then interferes with your temps.
-
smart mode is when you run your fan only when it's needed and how much it's needed. That's why it's called smart .... lol
so no, manual mode is not better -
Running mine on 7 normal, 64 when I'm gaming. Work's like a charm.

Daily bump.... -
why don't u get a gelpad, that would reduce ur temps by another 10-15 degrees. i brought one tired of asking people to suggest a cooler that will support side vents -

Should I let TPFanControl use smart mode instead of my BIOS mode?
