    Here's what I ordered yesterday, a T60 for $1145, including tax, using lenovo's sale and a coupon:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66GHz, 2MB L2, 667MHz FSB)[1]
    Genuine Windows XP Home Edition[12]
    15.4 WSXGA+ TFT
    Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
    1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)[8]
    No integrated fingerprint reader
    120GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm[4]
    CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim[5]
    ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe US/EMEA/LA/ANZ[10]
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery[60]
    1 Year Limited Warranty[7]

But now that i'm thinking about i'm wondering a few things:

1/ Should I have gone with Vista over XP? Is Vista the wave of the future and do you think I'm going to be sorry that I don't have it?

2/ What's the concensus about warranties? D'you think I should have plunked down the extra $150 or so for the 3-year option?

3/ how's the rest of it look?

    thanks!

It's a good thing that you didn't go with Vista. It's quite a system hog, and would have slowed down performance. About warranties: that's a pretty good deal for a 3 year warranty, but some people need warranties, and for others it's a waste of money. Looks good

1.) IMO, it doesn't matter at this point--if this is a work laptop and all the programs you need run on XP, why chance on Vista? On the other hand, Vista is expensive to buy and it will come to dominate in the future over XP. I would have gotten it and worked out the bugs unless I knew of a specific issue that would have forced XP.
2.) It's personal preference--if you are careful with your stuff a 1 year warranty should be fine. If 150 dollars is a fair trade for peace of mind, then you may want the 3 year. I would have gotten a 1 year except that my model came with a standard 3 year warranty. Things can be expensive to fix on a laptop--if you don't have the money to fix them if something goes wrong you may want the warranty.

maybe you should switch the graphics card from 950 to an ATI just in case... just in case :)

well, actually, i just went ahead and canceled my order and put a new one in, with a few changes.

i'm still going w/ xp but i went with the 2 yr service plan. i also changed how i paid for it, going with amex this time, which has a so-called buyer's assurance plan that'll (supposedly) extend the warranty for another year. so: 3 yrs for the price of two, unless i'm misguided.

hopefully i'll still be getting the LG screen....
