So I'm sitting here on my T61p and was thinking I wouldn't mind a bit more battery life and I wouldn't mind using a widescreen display because it's beautiful, haha. I'm not really using the nice graphics card on this machine to its fullest. I initially bought this machine because I was a mechanical engineering student hoping to use for CAD work but I got laid off/finished engineering school and now I'm an MBA student who just uses his laptop for documents and internet browsing.

the T400 would offer me greater battery life and I'd probably get the LED back-lit display (if it becomes available again). The weight would be the same. What do you guys think?

Sure, if you think the upgrade is worth it, why not? From what I've heard, the T400 is great!

On a side note, I like your career path! I'm actually pursuing a similar goal, although I'm only in 3rd year engineering currently (electrical). How are you finding job prospects for after graduation?

I would suggest since you have a perfectly working computer right now, that you wait until the next revision towards the end of this year. The next model may have ironed out the wrinkles of the T400/500 by including better support for switchable graphics (even though I personally have never had problems with it, many users do report some issues), audio-out on DisplayPort, and more LED-backlit screen options. Plus, it will may have Windows 7 as an option as well.

actually I got laid off in October (engineering position) and I was taking 3 MBA courses at the time so i decided to just focus on school and get it over with, while living off of unemployment. going to school and work is just way to time consuming and i'm fortunate enough to be in a situation where i don't need the money (i still live at home) so i'm just going to finish school (end of this year hopefully). so i haven't looked for a job since getting laid off. Although I think this summer when unemployment runs out I will be looking for an MBA intern position to get some business experience, as my previous experience is only engineering.

On a note, i hated EE. I was CompE but switched after taking the introductory circuits lab. haha. Good luck!

hmm, i never thought about that way. Seems like a very valid point. I'll take that into consideration. I do love my t61p, just wished the battery life was a bit more (i get around 4-4.5 hours).
