I am buying a new T series computer and for 50 bucks extra i can upgrade from 320 to 500 hard drive. I don't really use the computer for music or videos much, so I am not sure I really need the space. Any advice as to whether or not its worth it?

Personally, I would go with the pre-installed 320GB one and then upgrade later if there is a need for more space.. for $60-70 you could buy either WD Scorpio Black or Hitachi TravelStar (both are 500Gb). Or even better just get an external 1TB WD My Passport which is about $100.

Which T series are you purchasing? If you are buying a T420s, then you can only purchase 7mm 2.5" SATA drives (basically single platter drives).

It all depends on what you use your laptop for. What is your usage like? For some users, they do not want to deal with reinstalling Windows and will opt for the upgrade up front.

If you absolutely want, I can recommend the 750 GB Scorpio Black (very quiet, no vibrations in my Z61t), and the 500/640GB Scorpio Blue.

I would stick with the 320. Doesnt sound like the extra 180gb is going to make or break you, and you can buy a new drive for the cost of the upgrade if for some reason it does turn out you could use more. Save the $50.
