There is a small switch near the T440s external battery. What is it for?

There is a corresponding hole in the bottom cover, right?
If that is the case, then it is the reset button that you can push with a paper clip since you cannot easily unplug the internal battery.

No, it is not the microswitch near the internal battery, which disconnects the internal battery if pushed down. Any other ideas?

Have you checked the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T440s?

I guess it's responsible for switching from the external to the internal battery when you remove the external battery.
