After months of research and shopping around, I was finally planning to punch the numbers today for this T61p:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T9300 (2.5GHz 800MHz 6MBL2)
    Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
    15.4 WSXGA+ TFT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL)
    1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM)
    UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
    160GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim
PC Card Slot & Express Card Slot
4 in 1 Media Card Reader
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (supporting Centrino Pro)
    9 cell Li-Ion Battery

    TOTAL (without 10% savings): $1453.92

And whaddya know, the coupons are no longer working! According to the coupon thread they are valid until Aug 4.

My other dilemma is this: what's the consensus on the effect of the new laptops coming out this month. Are prices expected to go down on these older models? Remain the same? I'm afraid I'm asking that forbidden question "should I wait"...but the answer isn't always "no".

    Your input appreciated.

Well, I am waiting. I don't NEED a laptop right now, so I just can't let myself spend money on lesser technology when it is so close. Its not even a full month until the projected release date of the T400 and T500. Both will have very upgraded hardware.

If you NEED a laptop right now, go for it. Obviously there is no way around it. But definitely think twice before you buy it "because it would be really sweet to have it right now". I keep in inching towards buying myself a T61 as well, but I gotta slap myself on the wrist and make myself wait >_<

Actually, I think doing the student discount + USXSUMMERHEAT gets you a bit more savings than using just the 10% off coupon.

This brought me down to $1,270.71! Thanks so much!

Next, anyone that has added RAM to their T61p:

What brand did you choose and from where did you buy it?

The brand doesn't matter as long as you get lifetime warranty with it (most do).

I recommend you check out the RAM deals section here on NBR for some good deals.

I chose to buy 2GB from crucial and got it direct from the manufacturer. You can, however, purchase RAM from pretty much anywhere. Newegg.com is also a good website that offers good prices for RAM. Just purchase the memory wherever prices are good.

I bought 2x2GB G.Skill (I concur that any brand with a lifetime warranty should be good). I got mine from Newegg. There are a lot of options there and good prices. I highly recommend upgrading the RAM yourself, its easy to do and can save you lots of money. Also if you buy your own RAM you should run memtest86+ to make sure you have a good working module. Most manufactures will do a warranty replacement of memory that fails.

Done and done. Laptop estimated to ship 8/12. RAM will be here next week (gotta love newegg). I'll likely be back to let everyone know how it all went. Until then, I'm outta here...I've visited these forums nearly every day for a month!
