So, I'm contemplating buying a Thinkpad Edge 13, and I was wondering if there was anyone here who owned one and wanted to share their experience with it--positive or negative, but I'm especially looking to see if there are any red flags I should be on the lookout for.

How's the performance? The heat? Battery life? Overall satisfaction?

And side note: the Edge gets the same tech support/repair service as the "real" Thinkpads, right? I remember reading that Ideapads and such had to call another, presumably inferior tech support number.

Yes, I believe the Edge get the same support as regular ThinkPads. If you're looking for a well built ThinkPad, I might direct you to the R400 in the outlet, unless you're dead set on a 13" notebook. For the $800 you're going to spend on a Edge with a SUxx00 CPU, you can get a much better R400 for less in the outlet. You can probably do better than the AMD Edges as well.

If you get the amd version it run kind of hot. Not burning hot, but hot enough for you to feel the discomfort.

I really miss the Thinklight and the red color of the F-Keys is much to dark to read. No show stoppers, thou..

what works only in theory is the multitouch touchpad. the two finger scroll is much to sensitive, but this may be a problem of windows 7 in itself not beeing able to scroll smooth as a mac and i'm used to the trackpoint anyway..

keyboard is unbelievably fast and accurate, screen glares in bright sunlight indoors, but what do you expect for $700? (and best to get out at this weather anyway.)

battery life is "set it and forget it" - with a six cell and an SSD like i have i don't even bother thinking about battery life anymore, it is simply enough juice to get thru the day (6 hours /real life/, no kidding)

a last point, when you come from a an old 12" (x31 in my case) you are a bit shocked, that it /looks/ much larger, although the height is the same the additional 2 inch or so on the length brings the feel of the size from "tiny" (in comparision to a 15" notebook) to "small". but when you take it around it doesn't really matter, as the edge 13 is lighter then the old X3x/X4x/X6x and the little bulk of the 6 cell battery acts as a handle when grabbing the notebook, very comfortable...

(i have the thing for 2 month now..)
