Noticed my new 7200.2 120gb Seagate drive was in SATA I mode, and then remembered it had a removable connector on the front to force the drive into SATA I mode. Took the pin off, and laptop fully supports SATA II mode. Drive detects just fine as that speed, just no idea if anything else changed :p

So for all those curious, yes the T60 supports SATA300, SATA II, or SATA 3.0Gbs drives.

Hey do you want to run some benchmarks in SATA I verses SATA II for us? It would be interesting to see if NCQ and whatever else in SATA II speeds anything up at all. Also I'm looking at buying that same drive. It's made by seagate/maxtor right? Where did you get it and how much did you pay? The lowest I've seen is 114 shipped at zipzoomfly.

I got it for 114 through zipzoomfly, as it was the cheapest who had it in stock.

So far with HDtune, I cant see any difference in anything. NCQ was more of a AHCI mode thing, not really I vs II.

What do you gain from running it in SATA I vs. SATA II then?

Benchmarked the 7200.2 in my desktop in both modes, and on the Laptop in SATAII mode only. Yes there is a jump in burst speed in the desktop, but no this change is not noticed when installed in the laptop. Attached are 3 pictures of HDtune and the 7200.2.

Here is the picture from Seagate's support section. Same layout on both the 2.5 and 3.5" drives.

Definitely an interesting find! Never knew that... will definitely keep it in mind for when I get a 7K200 or any 200 GB 7200 RPM SATA II notebook HDD! ;)

When are those 200GB 7200RPM HDDs coming out? Also is Seagate/Maxtor the only company that offers 7200RPM 2.5" drives over 100GB?

Both Seagate and Hitachi have 200 GB... I think Fujitsu also has one... I'm not sure though. I just remember reading about it on Engadget or something.

Well, dont get the smallest, as sometimes it is like a 6-8 dollar bump from 60-80 for example. Then have the drive for an external enclosure or the 2nd HDD bay adapter.

So if I were to order this from zipzoomfly like you did is there anything inparticular I need to do to make it work with my T60? I should have restore and recovery disks by then from Lenovo and can follow the instructions how to swap the drives but want to know if there are any additional surprises (aside from the pin as you mentioned). Oh and how was your experience with zipzoomfly, I've never ordered from them.

    Thanks.

You need a small phillips screwdriver, to remove the bay cover, and remove the tray around the old drive. I had a complete working restore made (not the factory restore) of my functioning system, and then used that to restore to the new drive after I had everything put back together.

Zipzoomfly was pretty awesome. If you are familiar with newegg, their service at least for HD's is a step above that. Newegg just seems to toss things into a plain box with foam and hope it makes it to you. Zipzoomfly has these foam HD cases that they slide the drives into, and then package it up.

Thanks for the info on it and zipzoomfly. Out of curiosity you say you didn't use the lenovo factory restore but had one made up. How would I go about doing the same? I'd love to avoid Symantec and other bloatware but unfortunately since the hidden partition on my current drive is toast now I think base software administrator won't work, so I'd love to know how you're doing this with your new drive?
