When I connect to software installer, it seems that there are so many "recommended" updates. How many of these programs does one really need? What do you consider essential?

I almost never update mine. Just the Windows Service Packs. I do update virus, spyware, and firewalls though.

I usually update everything when I first set up the PC, and then never get around to updating again. (However, seeing as my laptop is four years old, there's not all that many updates anyway.)

If you have a PROBLEM with anything, do the update on that, if one's available.
