    Hi all...

I wanted to know how to turn off the wireless and bluetooth on the R400. Are there no physical / HW buttons to do this?

Secondly, I find that sometimes (for no apparent reason) the screen (particularly the taskbar at the bottom of the screen) flickers. It then goes away. It happens only once in a while and I was wondering why.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Cheers!

The master wireless on/off switch is on the front edge of the laptop. Using it will toggle between all wireless networks off and the last known state of all the wireless modules. If you want to turn each one individually on/off, press Fn + F5. Then click the appropriate button.

Hmmm...Thanks. It worked. The switch is odd in that it does not have the most common icon used for wifi...! But anyways, I got it in precisely the way you mentioned.

This is why Thinkpad is not suited as a Consumer laptop, it is more of a prosumer laptop, most people whom buy thinkpads would probably already own a thinkpad before or have more than one thinkpad.

True. I am coming back to a ThinkPad after a very long time.

I have a question about "Active Connections" and I wonder if you can help me with it.

I downloaded the utility from the Lenovo site and tried to install it, but it is always the XP version (I can't see where the Win 7 version is). Can you, if possible, direct me to it?

The version I downloaded is 6icx16ww.exe

i don't think there is win 7 version for active connections, the window's own wireless connection manager have evolved to supplement this role.

P.S. i could be wrong on this one, since my laptop was built before Win 7 was officially released, so i don't have the Lenovo version of the Win 7 with all the thinkvantage software installed.

Lenovo did initially say that, but reversed positions when there was more than expected demand for the more advanced features in Access Connections. Personally, I did not use it in Vista, and have even less reason to use it in Win7.

The Windows 7 version of Access Connections can be found here, if you do need it. Version 6ic716ww.exe

    OK...Another question:

Is it necessary to drain the battery a couple of times and recharge it? Or, is this essentially useless in the new generation of batteries?

Thanks in advance and apologies for what may seem as really n00b questions.

    Cheers!

Generally, it's best not to always charge a battery to 100% - usually, I charge to 95%, using the Power Manager battery thresholds. I have it set to start charging at 30%.

Hw does this work? Do you not keep your machine plugged into the power suppy when not mobile? I keep it plugged in till I need to move.

BTW, just read your review of the T500...excellent! Thanks!

No, I keep my machine plugged in when not mobile. The battery charge thresholds allow you to do so and specify when the battery should be charged. For example, if I set my thresholds to 30% and 95%, if my battery is currently at 47% charge, it will not charge even when plugged in. Only when the charge level drops to below 30%, the battery will begin charging, and stop at 95% charge.

To view and edit these thresholds, launch Power Manager, go to the Battery tab, and edit your settings there.

    Glad it helped :)

@MidnightSun: Thanks! But I don't think I will be able to use this system because in India there are frequent power failures and it would be a bad scene if say the battery is at 50% and the power fails in which case I would end up with...well you get the picture!

    Cheers!

    Folks...

I have another question about Windows 7 and the Thinkvantage System Update Options...

I was wanting to download the System Update package for my machine at this link. But when I read the accompanying text document, I find that the R400 and the R500 are not listed as being systems on which the package can be downloaded and used. I do note, however, that this Win 7 specific package can be used for the T400 and the T500.

Could you please tell me if this package can be used on my R400 (running Win 7)?
