    Hello,
I bought a customized Y510p(from computerupgradeking) and I have a few questions about it.

    1. Is installing a clean copy of Windows 8 easy or not? And is it worth it or not?

    2. Can I remove the second graphics card from the slot when I'm not gaming to save energy(since it seems that you can't use the Intel HD 4600 with both graphics cards enabled)?

    3. Is that CD ultrabay for Y500 compatible with Y510p? I was talking to lenovo support via the life chat and they didn't really help.

    4. Any information about the other ultrabay options, I read that some lenovo laptops have a battery ultrabay sometime ago, is there any one compatible with Y510p?

    Thanks,
    Hush

    2. I suppose you can, but then you'll have your laptops' insides exposed unless you place something else there (like an HDD caddy).

    3. It should be. I just bought a generic 2.5 HDD caddy from Amazon and it worked perfectly. (You'll have to transfer the faceplate to keep the symmetry though.)

    4. The ultrabay options are SLI, DVD, Blu-ray, HDD caddy, and fan. I don't believe there is a battery option.

    1. Easy? Depends how experienced you are. Worth it? Barely, i would even say no. The only usefulness for that is if you plan on installing on a different storage medium, like an Ultrabay SSD.

    2. Yep. I also recommend buying a fan (if you can find one) for 29$, it will not only protect your ultrabay from Dust, but give better cooling and improve the looks :)

    3. Yes it is.

    4. The Y500 HDD, Fan, DVD and Blu-Ray all work with the Y510p. Only the 650M SLI bay won't. Ultrabay batteries for the Y500/Y510p do not exist, if you find any, they are designed for Thinkpads.

Thank you very much. I didn't find any fan for Y500/Y510p, so where can I find one? And is the Y410p ultrabay the same as the ones above? Another question is that can I disable the second card while its still installed?

    1. Lenovo just removed the fan from their website the other day, so i can't seem to find it. However i think you can still get the blu-ray drive for 70$.

    2. I think so, but i am not experienced enough with SLI Y series, since i don't own one. I think you will have to disable SLI in the Nvidia settings, then install the Intel driver. Note that this may not work, as i'm not 100% sure of this.

    Thanks again :D

One last question since I am getting the machine from the US(I live outside). I was thinking of getting a thermal compound since their prices here are no less than three times more expensive here, so do you recommend that or not and what thermal compounds are recommended (thinking of getting them for the CPU+2 GPUs) so I also need an estimate of the quantity :)

I heard arctic silver is good. Haven't repasted my laptop yet (lowered temps by 8°C using undervolting alone), though i have some spare Cooler Master HTK-002-U1 in my basement.

I heard that I should get a non-conducting compound to prevent "frying" my components.

And can you tell me about how you did the undervolting, can I do it when I'm not using CPU- demanding applications and return it to its normal state otherwise(I have the i7-4800MQ not the i7-4700MQ)

Where did you get the 4800MQ? From where did you buy your laptop?

I don't know how good the 4800 undervolts, but im using a 4700 with -85mv and all running stable.

One other question, I bought this like a month ago(was too excited), shall I just put install it when I get the laptop or do I have to do something before installing

How much did they charge for the 4800? Usually, if you buy from a reseller, they buy their laptops from Lenovo, 4700 included, then add in a full 4800, charging you an exorbitant sum for it, because they had to buy a 2nd CPU. This is what XOTIC does, anyways.

That's not bad. Why do you need the 4800 over the 4700? Compiling? Rendering?

When you get it, be sure to update wireless drivers and uninstall the bloatware.

Jobine this is for you! You seem to know your stuff!!! Koodos for that!

I bought a y510p (59390951). Its my understanding it comes with the 24gb M.2 NGFF.

Theres some things i wanna do to it. And i thought maybe you could help me out with a few questions.

1.First if at all possible I want to put Win 8 on the 24gb. Is it possible to fit that parition in there?

    2. I want to replace the 1TB with a 256gb samsung 840 pro. Being that i dont have any data on the new laptop would it be wise to just do a clean install? If so how would i go about doing that from an iso on a flash drive?

    3. I aslo want to replace the thermal paste. Is it very difficult to get to? Also the thermal pads... Is there a certain way to remove them and place them back between the heatsink? Like can you mess up a thermal pad?

    4. Is replacing the fan something i should even be thinking about?

    5. Are there any tiny copper stick on heatsinks that i could put in there or would that just end up making it hotter because of heat retention?

    6. Lastly, how do you undervolt the CPU so that my temps could stay in the 80-90 range. Also by doing that would i lose turbo boost? Or would that in fact make turbo boost work longer?

Thanks a bunch in andvance! Your info on these forums has already helped me so much. :spinny:

    1. Yes but no. Putting Windows on a 24GB is a bad idea, as the space will fill up way too quickly for it to be useable.

    2. Use this: Microsoft Store to turn a Windows 8 iso into a Boot-able USB

    3. I have no idea. I have the same intention as you. But i took the easy way out and just undervolted, cut my temps by up to 8°C :D Agoff tried to repaste his, but gave up. I think Octiceps has successfully repasted both his CPU and Ultrabay. Ask him.

    4. Meh. You could always use an ODD fan. Good luck finding one, though.

    5. I have no idea.

    6. You can use Intel XTU to achieve that. Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU) Do some stability tests until you can lower the voltage enough without compromising stability. There is a built in feature called Watchdog that will reset to stock voltage if you mess up and create a boot loop.

So how would i set the ngff ssd as a cache after a clean install. Would simply downloading the express cache driver automatically do it?

Also what is TRIM? What settings would let me extend the life of my SSD. Im using the 1TB externally as a media drive.

Ive never gotten passed taking the keyboard off of a laptop so looks like ill be undervolting.

Download this: ExpressCache Software for Windows 7 64bit, Windows 8 64bit - ThinkCentre, ThinkPad

TRIM is a garbage collection protocol for SSD's. It does not work with Expresscache, but most modern SSD's have improved garbage collection and TRIM is not always required.

    Good luck

One last question, does the Y510p SLI come with the power supply with bigger capacity?
