I've been using my T61. Just now, I heard some noise that sounded like either the fan slowing down so it becomes more audible, or something similar, for a few seconds, then the noise stopped, and it seems to be too quiet now, so I wonder if the fan stopped working?? How can I check if the fan is working or not (preferably without opening up the laptop)? Thanks.

download HWmonitor and check your temps. if theyre >70C and going up you've got a fan failure. Also, it might report RPMs of any fans, but just because it doesnt show up doesnt mean your fan is not working.

Thanks. I downloaded HWmonitor. All temperatures are below 50C. I hear the fan is running now, sounds normal. What was strange was the sound that I heard before: it sounded like clicks, similar to when the leaves of a fan hit something while running. It was just for a few seconds that caught my attention. Still puzzled

Maybe your HDD heads parked when you moved the laptop, Active Protection System kicked in and parked the HDD momentarily when you moved the system.

I was just also thinking maybe it's the HDD, however I wasn't moving the laptop at that time. In any case, good to know about the possible case you are suggesting. Is it risky to move the laptop too much while using it?

He he, not likely in this case - I would have heard him scream :D
