So I'm trying to decide on a laptop for college, and I've got it down to a Sony SZ series or a Thinkpad T60. The Sony appeals to me because it's more attractive (and I'm kind of shallow), but also I like that it has a 13.3" screen (I like smaller computers) and is more portable in general. Also, I hear the screen is brighter in general, which I like. With the Thinkpad, I hear the tech support is impeccable, which is nice because I have horrid computer luck (however, it's usually software trouble which ends up in me dealing with Microsoft). I don't really play games, I'm just looking for a notebook that will get me through long hours of researching, writing, and just a really rough workload. I need something that will last me at least 4 years - basically to get me through graduation.

I don't really know much more about computers, so any good insight would be appreciated. I guess what I want to know is what would you pick, and why. Thanks =]

I would vote for the thinkpad in this case just because of Sony's outrageous prices.

The standard battery you'd get with the sony would only last about 3-4 hours and their 9 cell battery costs about $300.

Basically I think Sony is way too overpriced.

Well when configured to be basically the same, the price difference is only $230, which isn't such a big deal for something I'll be using for 4 years.

Given your needs, I would vote ThinkPad as well. Perhaps something like the Fujitsu s7110 would offer a good compromise.

I would pick the ThinkPad because

    a) It's what I used all through college as a computer science major (read, I abused my laptop with hours of usage) and it held up.
    b) support is good.
    c) great screen for long hours of viewing
    d) it's a business notebook and free of crapware mfrs. love to install on consumer notebooks

And as far as looks, accessorize with a cool looking Bluetooth mouse, laptop backpack / sleeve and people will understand you're a stylish but serious person ;)

Zaz is right, Fujitsu is another manufacturer to look at if you want to see slightly more stylish alternatives yet still well built machines. I'm a fan of them and loved using the the LifeBook S6000 series for a period.
