I experienced this issue with my T61 and thought it was just a faulty sound card, but my X200 has the exact same problems. I am using Windows XP.

I think I have isolated the problems to the use of VPN and LAN. Basically when I am connected to our corporate VPN (via Cisco VPN Client) and try to do any data transferring over LAN (Windows Networking) like copy files to or from a shared drive on another computer, my sound starts to crackle and pop like crazy. I have tried various players, but they are all prone to this. Audio from streaming videos in my browser starts to crack and pop, music from winamp, wmp, etc will do the same. In fact, WinAmp will even crash when it gets really bad. Windows Media Player doesn't crash, but the sound gets so horrible that I have to turn all audio off.

I think it has to do with the audio card on these ThinkPads. I think they use a USB interface and choke up with any network activity over VPN (which must tax the bus quite a lot).

    Anybody else experience similar issues?

Wow. I’ve never heard of this before. I make VPN connections all the time, have for years, and have never had this issue on any of my systems. Then again, I don’t use that horrid Cisco VPN client either.
