    Hi...

    Got a quick question:

When I compare the output of music (usually played using VLC) between the X201 and the R400, I find that there is a substantial difference between the two. The R400 is louder than the X201 - both through the speakers (which I can understand), but also via headphones, which I, frankly, cannot especially because the volume levels on both machines are the same when I make the comparison.

Is the output of the X201 actually lower than that in the R400? Or, could this be something that can be fixed (software-centric solution?)? If yes, any leads and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

the X201 does seem to have pretty low sound output, i frequrntly listen to music with the volume at 100%. it is rather annoying at times. i dont have a solution, but just thought i should chip in so you know its not just yours thats doing it

Thanks. Like you I find this very irritating. It's almost like I am straining to hear at max volume!!!

I wish there was a software fix to this which we could do ourselves because I am quite sure Lenovo would never agree that this is a problem.

you could get a pair of sennheizer CX300-II's. their volume is much better than the other headphones. not actually a fix, but a work around

Currently, I am using the Sennheizer PMX 60, which works very well with the R400 but not so with the X201.

    Damn! :(

I take it must be the different sound cards, some ThinkPads I used have SoundMAX (ADI) audio cards, the newer ones seem to use Conexant audio chips and I do find them a bit lacking. I would say my T420 (using headphones) is not as loud in the same level compared to my T61.

Good point. Thanks. I know my X201 has the Conexant card, I'll check what in the R400 and report back. This is a shame really!

its annoying with my gf's logitechs and my spare sony headphones, but with my CX300-II's its pretty ok. so i'm fine for music, but when i get one of those movies that somehow have been encoded with lower than normal volume i have a problem.

i got mine off amazon UK for 12 pounds including delivery, 12 quid is a steal for a pair of these, they're going for about 14 quid now, still very reasonable.
