Does anyone know where you can still get hold of a T61p 14in laptop with an SXGA+ screen? (UK preferred)

My friend has got T41p similarly specced and I'd like to get hold of one and max it out.

    cheers

    Paul

You got a choice of two official part numbers for the SXGA screen on the T61, either the Samsung LTN141P4-L02 panel (42T0369) or TMD-Toshiba LTD141EN9B panel (42T0373).

Personally I tend to find suppliers from eBay as prices from Lenovo directly will be pricey. Don't be afraid to ask questions just to be sure, ask for details about the LCD panel such codes and manufacturer IDs which most sellers will be happy to help.

No. I meant buying the actual laptop itself, not a replacement screen.

Will edit the original message to make this clear.

Just my own personal opinion here, you're probably better off with a T60, but a T60 will limit you to 3GB of memory. The T61p come with the nVidia GPU, which has abnormally high failure rates. See here. You could look for a regular T61 with the Intel GPU and the SXGA+, but those are somewhat rare. There's one here. You could ask if they'll ship to the UK. Probably the best place to buy a used ThinkPad is the marketplace forum on ThinkPads.com.

What about a T61 with a Radeon X1400? Are they more reliable?

Also, looking at the forums, it suggests that a T61 can be upgraded to 8Gb memory if desired, but on thinkwiki it seems to indicate that they can only take 4Gb.

Just as a matter of interest, how easy is it to change the processor on a T61 / T61p? What is the max processor that can be used?

    cheers

4:3 14.1" T61s are fairly rare. If I were you, I'd watch eBay, Craigslist, and IBM's certified used store like a hawk -- particularly the latter, as the units that show up there tend to be in quite good condition (near-mint if they're refurbs.)

T61s come with either the nVidia 140m or Intel X3100 GPUs. There's no X1400. The T61 can indeed take 8GB of memory. When the manuals were written there was no 4GB memory sticks and the manuals were never updated. The CPU on the T61 is socketed and is very easily swapped.

Is there an IBM certified used store for the UK? I have only managed to find the US one so far.

    cheers

No idea, sorry. You might try calling your local IBM rep and seeing if they offer used equipment.

There's no X1400 offered on the T61. If you've seen it somewhere, it's a mistake or a typo.

Thanks. I contacted the seller and he admitted to the mistake (in fact, one of many :( )

X1400 was available in the R60 and T60 laptops.

T61 standard aspect ration with SXGA+ is extremely hard to come by in nowadays, i recently bought a T61 standard LCD with XGA and intend to upgrade it to a SXGA+ LCD later this year. It took me ages to find one that was in good nick and have a T8300 CPU.
