Hey everyone, how's it going? So with the release of SP1, I attempted to install it onto my thinkpad, but to no avail. I decided to do a clean install, I actually did 3. The first two were x86 and then my latest one was back to x64. Now that I finally have SP1 installed, my notebook refuses to shut down. It proceeds normally but when it says "Windows is shutting down" it hangs there. I waited 5 hours and it still remained there. I am leaving for a funeral in NY tomorrow so I would like a possible solution as soon as possible. Thanks for all help.

Hibernate..? Does it work? Anyway, it might be a process that refuses to close.. I doubt this would be easy to resolve unless it's a known issue...

I've found other people on the internet having a similar issue but thy never responded. I'm thinking of just removing SP1.

With selective startup, I enabled only Microsoft services and it worked, so I am assuming something from the lenovo update is a fault here. I think I will order the sp1 dvd and do another clean install when I receive it and do the lenovo update after sp1. Any ideas what could be causing this issue?

Have you tried disabling any antivirus products? I've had shutdowns fail due to antivirus products from a couple vendors.

I have Vista 64 with SP1 and have no problem at all.

I do believe something is refusing to shutdown. Try a safe mode boot and try shutting down

You use process of elimination with msconfig to determine what it is.

I get that too, but it doesn't seem to go on as long as yours (5 hrs) on my X61t. I end up getting a Stop 0x9f error. I also get the random not wanting to go into suspend issue and random not wanting to wake up from suspend issue on both my T61p and my X61t. Both are running Vista. It's somewhat infuriating. I end up shutting down hard quite frequently so I can use my PC in a reasonable amount of time.

my bro had the same issue

i think one of the lenovo programs or updates from windows has scheduled something at shutdown.

do a hard drive scan on next reboot and clear all temp directories (manually or use CCleaner). then do all important windows and lenovo updates.

try shutting down after that. if the HD is active then its finalizing an update, just wait it out (15 minutes tops)

also reinstall any lenovo programs you might use. (that is, uninstall, delete the folder, use CCleaner to clear the registry of any trace and then reinstall it)

CCleaner scares me on x64. I used it to clean up my registry and it went boom. Luckily I had saved a back up of it but I am timid of it now. I'll deal with it i suppose when i get home form my trip. I also ordered the SP1 dvd so I figure a clean install followed by that directly might do the trick
then install office and lenovo updates.

The card reader is the culprit. Any news on a working fix?
