I did a clean install of XP, but I can't get any sound.

I installed this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-67816.html , but that didn't help. Under "Sound and Audio Devices" it says "No Audio Device".

also, the fn+ home/end keys for brightness do not work. When I press then it shows the on screen green bar go up or down, but there is no change in actual brightness

Okay, speaker drivers worked perfectly, what about for brightness?

This is interesting, I can change the brightness while it is booting, but once I see the Windows XP logo I can't change it anymore (but I do get the green overlay)

the speakers work fine now, just the brightness is being weird.
