I asked a question on the lenovo website and as usual there was no reply from them.

I was looking at the T540p model that is on sale on the Lenovo USA website at $650. But there are quite a few things that are ambiguous there.
    1. Is the windows 7 64bit pro upgradeable to 8.1 like on all the other models?
    2. Is the keyboard backlit?
    3. Is the fingerprint reader absent from this model?

I can wait till January 2015 till I can buy the new laptop. Should I go for this deal or wait a bit more?

They *start* at $649...configure your own set of options and see what you come up with...

It is NOT a customizable model. The second one is customizable which is much much more expensive despite having lower specs.

Huh..."View or Customize" is what I was referring to...

From brief reading of somewhat dense spec sheet this is what I'm getting:

    1) No free path from W7 64 to W8.x

    2) Most likely not.

    3) No FPR

All of that said, still not a bad deal if that's the system that you'd be interested in to begin with.

Ya thats what i figured. I should not assume a positive reply to anything that is not mentioned. It doesnt have that view and customize button. Thanks for the help. :)

That particular model doesn't in its column, but there's a button saying "View or Customize" in the upper-to-the-right-middle section of the entire page.

If you're *really* interested in this machine, I suggest picking up the phone and verifying specs one by one.

    Good luck.

If i press that it goes and sets the screen to the model listing. Doesnt open a customization tab. I guess i will ask my cousin to do that. I live in a different country and i need the laptop to last atleast 3-4 years. I have till january to get the laptop. Should i go for this deal or wait for an offer on x1 carbon or T440s which would be the ideal choices due to much lower weight?

Then you need to make sure that the model you choose is covered by IWS in your country of residence. You can verify that using the model number on this page:

Select Your Product - Lenovo Support (US)

I can't really offer advice on this matter without knowing more about your specific needs and priorities.

    Good luck.

Thank you for all the help. I went ahead and ordered it. Since windows 10 is releasing next year i would be better off waiting for it as a 2nd OS.
