im having the weirdest problem, took me a while to figure out but when i use the X61 on AC with the battery taken out my pc runs on 1/2 speed, and i played with all the CPU settings in BIOS and Power Schemes , my CS runs at 1/2 speed always, as soon as you put the battery in it goes up 2x, same with every other game, i cant figure it out, i should be able to use the computer without a battery in it if its running on AC....?!!?!

EDIT: i found out other thinkpad models have this problem too, which is such a serious flaw i cant believe Lenovo hasnt fixed it yet

You may come to find that this a "feature" of most modern notebooks that are within a couple generations of the current one. I know Apple's current notebook offerings have the same behavior and I'd be willing to bet that most if not all other modern notebooks do the same.

I'm not sure exactly what the logic is in downclocking even while on AC without the battery, but I also don't really see why you would want to keep the battery removed for any length of time while on AC.

Something you might want to try is switching the Adaptive Thermal Management setting (*not* the SpeedStep settings) in the BIOS over to "Max Performance" if it isn't already. That *might* make a difference as it does affect what temp the CPU will throttle at; the "balanced" setting will make the CPU throttle down at a much lower temp than it needs to in an effort to cut down on heat and thus hopefully the fan noise generated.

no i tried that setting already, and the reason for using the x61 without a battery is the battery is 1/3 the weight of the entire laptop, which makes it much more comfortable to hold on your lap without one, and considering i dont take the laptop anywhere and its always plugged in, i dont see why i shouldnt have that option, its a bad design decision in my opinion
