I'm seeing someting odd on my brand new T61. No matter what power plan I use the lowest speed the processor goes into is 1.6Ghz. I have a Core 2 7100 rated at 1.8ghz.

I've reloaded the OS using the recovery partition and it didnt change anything.

Is 1.6 the lowest the power manager sets it?

Use CPU-Z to check the voltage.

I think you are seeing Intel's dynamic FSB switching which halves the clock and then uses the 8x multiplier to give a CPU speed of 800MHz. A lot of software can't detect the FSB speed switching.

If the CPU voltage at 8x is around 0.9V (I think it is 0.1V below the 6x voltage) then everything is fine.

I've seen the speedstep work well using Intel Thermal Analysis Tool to monitor the clock speeds.

It was CPU-z's fault. I used IMT and it showed the 800mhz speed correctly.

By the way. What Power Profiles do you guys usually use? Is 800Mhz really adequate for working with batteries? Can you still get decent performance at that speed?

I created a custom profile that sets the CPU to "adaptive" on battery and "highest" on AC.

Currently I am getting about 3 hours of battery life with a 9-cell.
