I've pretty much decided to get a t60 as soon as I can save enough money. I read somewhere about the thinkpads drainage system or something if something happens to get spilled into the keyboard area, etc. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and how the end result was?

I spilled on my keyboard. Still works perfectly. Drains out the bottom.

The drainage system works best for non-sticky liquids, i.e. water. Soda, coffee with sugar, and similar liquids will leave a sticky residue that requires a thorough cleaning. Even so, at least the spilled soda doesn't harm internal components of the notebook.
