I did an update of my system and Windows. After the update, every time I receive new mail, the same beep that plays when I go into Standby mode plays for the new mail. I use Outlook for my mail. I have gone into control panel and set a specific sound for New Mail Notification (which isn't the beep).

If I disable/stop that beep in the device manager, I get no sound when I receive new mail. So, somehow in that update from Lenovo and Windows, something happened with one of those updates which now makes my computer see both new mail and standby as the same sound.

All other sounds seem to play fine. I've done all sorts of research for a few months now and can find no help with this issue. I have to believe that this happened as a result of either the Lenovo system update or the Windows update. When it first happened, I tried to reset my system to a prior date, but that didn't work.

    Help. Thoughts?

    I have a Lenovo W500.

What version of Windows? I don't see a standby sound for Windows 7.

    XP

Even in XP it's kind of hidden. When you go into Device Manger in XP, you click View and the "Show Hidden Drivers." It's then under Non-Plug and Play Drivers. Not sure if it's the same in 7

I think it's a beep sound that can be found in the Power Manager -> Global Power Settings -> "Beep when power state changes."
