I have this problem with my T61 thinkpad. If I were to close the screen right as it's going into standby it will either crash and restart my computer, or log me out. I just reformatted and it still is doing this.. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a bios update that can fix this or something?

I have the same problem with my T61 - i.e. it has never logged me out, it just crashes and restarts. I have even consulted a service center. First, they couldn't reproduce the error, then they told me it might have been caused by HDD so they replaced Seagate one for Fujitsu-Siemens, but it didn't help. They said they had asked Lenvo support for that, so I'm wondering if the'll write me back.
I have the latest BIOS available from System Update.

Try running the System Update utility from the Thinkvantage software, and getting the latest Power Manager software and power management drivers. If yours aren't up to date, this might cause an issue.

Also update your sound drivers if they are available while you are at it; I found out that the newest ones fix a problem where occasionally sound support disappears after sleep until the system is rebooted.

You shouldn't have to send a computer in or buy a new hard drive for a minor glitch like this..

All of these you mentioned are up-to-date. I really had the sound problem and it was really solved by the updae, but still, the main problem persists.
It's pretty annoying when I'm in a hurry, put it on standy, then forget and close the lid. Then I loose everything I forgot to save.

I just noticed a new update through ThinkVantage System Update today:

    QFE# Description of Fixed Problem
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
935192 Error message when you resume a Windows XP-based computer from hibernation after you apply hotfix 918005: "Stop 0x00000044"

Perhaps this update will help you. I'd check it out.

I can't find it through System Update nor on Lenovo support website. I guess I've already installed it or it doesnt apply. Anyway, according to this article
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935192
it applies to S4 (hibernation), but not to S3 (standy), which is the mode in question.
Thanks for a hint anyway, if it appears in the System Update, I'll definitely give it a try.

I have a similar problem. I press the sleep button and then close the lid without waiting for it to show it is sleeping (the moon) and it just freezes. There is no display and the keyboard does not work. I need to hard restart to fix.

I managed to find the update on Lenovo support website:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68056
installed it but unfortunately the problem still persists.

It looks like I have found a solution (well, a work-around). The Data Execution Prevention seems to be causing the problem. When I disabled it by putting /NoExecute=AlwaysOff in boot.ini at the end of the line corresponding to my Windows installation, the problem seemed to disappear.
