so i finally received my T60 today and i must say its an amazing machine. its good to look at and performs just as well.

i was wondering what programs should i uninstall or dont let them begin on startup. ibm has loaded the machine with a bunch of stuff that begins on startup and i wanted to ask the people here which is necessary and which is not.

also what are some of the essential programs that one MUST have?

    comments welcome

Norton and google desktop would be at the top of my list.

It is interesting.. but the search engine.. like Microsoft's.. is a bit intrusive.. it helps if you have lots of documents and you need to search them on a regular basis. Otherwise, Windows' search is sufficient.

Norton... the quality just isn't in their apps anymore. If you stop running as Administrator or in the Administrator group, you don't need anti-virus (unless if you do Run As... and execute a program you weren't sure about).

    thanks for the heads up.

i think i will be fine w/o google desktop.

as for norton, the machine already came loaded with syamntec. so i am gonna stick with that one for now.

can you recommend disabling any startup items via msconfig?

    I don't have my T60 yet (6/16/2006) :(

So I don't know what yours is running. I would check your Startup group and see if there's any apps there that are for "fast startups" of apps (which isn't necessary anymore). For instance, Real Audio has a program that loads it totally into memory so it APPEARS to run fast... Winzip does that... Winamp etc.

I personally like Copernic as a search tool. I've tried Google Desktop, too, but don't like how it stores old information and doesn't seem to update what it has or doesn't have.
