    My new ThinkPad just arrived.

I ordered it without any Operating System. So just DOS at the mo.

I have XP Pro on CD. Now how do I go about installing it? Is it just like a re-install?

Can someone please give me a quick step-by-step?
I havn't even turned it on yet.

Make sure the XP disc has AHCI drivers slipstreamed in, as well as SP3.

Pretty sure it doesn't have those things. It's an old CD. Wouldn't even have SP1.

I have Windows 2000, XP Home and Pro and 98 - I assume all are useless.

    Maybe only Vista will work?
I have a copy of Vista Ultimate 64 bit that's already registered on another computer in the house.

Looks like I'll have to purchase XP Pro SP3 ...

another $200 - I was trying to save money by using the software I already have. SO much for that!!!

You can also easily slipstream these updates into the current disc using nLite.

If he doesn't even know what the error means, I doubt that he knows how to slipstream the AHCI driver in.

    3. Insert Windows XP install disc. CHECK
    4. Restart and press F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen to enter BIOS. CHECK
    5. Select Config, then Serial ATA (SATA), and set AHCI to Compatibility. CHECK
    6. Prioritize boot list so it boots from CD. CHECK
    7. Press F10 to save and restart. CHECK
    8. Upon bootup, press any key to boot from disc. CHECK
    9. Follow on-screen prompts to install Windows XP. CHECK

    FAILED same error

Hmmm, I have bad news for you. It seems that the error occurs if you install vanilla Windows XP or XP SP1. A search in google indicates that if you slipstream SP3 into the Windows XP installation disc, you'll be fine. You should try this first. Search google for a guide to slipstreaming.

you also need to have SATA driver in there before you can process the installation.

Ok, how about this plan ...

    - I download nLite.
    - Download SP1 ... and make a streamlined XP with SP1a

(because, I'm told, you can't make a SP3 disk from just XP, you need at least SP1 or SP2)

Then, with my new XP Pro CD with SP1a, I start over.
    Download SP3
and use nLite to make my new SP1a CD into a streamlined XP SP3 CD!

    How's that?
Should take more than a thousand cups of coffee and a few days ...

I hope my original XP CD doesn't have SP1 already on it. How can you find out just from the CD? It's an old copied one, so it has no details on it.

If I remember correctly, service packs work as full patch, and not incremental patch. What this means is that SP3 already includes all the updates of SP1 and SP2, which means that you only need to slipstream SP3 into your vanilla XP installation disc and you'll be fine. Also, slipstream the AHCI driver onto the disc as well. Good luck.

They were misinformed. Just download nLite and SP3, and try it. If you get stuck post back here.

Note: Your original Windows XP CD must have at least service pack 1 already integrated for this tutorial to work. For most people this isn't an issue as the Windows XP CD's that have been sold over the past several years already include SP1 and even SP2 in many cases.

    From this website: http://www.lancelhoff.com/how-to-slipstream-service-pack-3-into-windows-xp/

    Prerequisites

    1.
Windows XP Professional or Home Setup CD

You will need your existing Windows XP Professional or Home setup CD. This CD can either be the original Windows XP release CD, or one with either SP 1 or Service Pack 2 integrated.

    from this website:
    http://www.howtohaven.com/system/slipstream-xp-service-pack-3.shtml

    Just to name 2.

That's not true in my experience. My own XP Pro disc was acquired when XP first came out in 2001, i.e. no service pack on it. I've done it many times on many machines and have never had a problem with it.

Ok, I'll give it a go...

SP1a failed to download at 99% OF COURSE!

so now I'm downloading SP3 Final Release from softwarepatch.com because I couldn't find a simple download on microsoft or softpedia or anywhere.

    So, another 2hrs!

I'll let you know how I go. Do I really need to find those other drivers first? like for my webcam and wireless, or can I do that after the install?
    And SATA and AHCI driver?

Ah, I know why no one is answering.

After an exhaustive search on google for my problem, it turns out that that this particular problem has never been resolved.

A few people have asked the question but as far as I can see, it has never been answered. Weird.

Anyway, I might start a new thread with the problem and see if anyone answers since it seems to WAY beyond the scope of my initial problem of installing.

    Thanks
